MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team closed out its 2019 campaign on Thursday night after falling to UIC, 1-0, in double overtime.
"Congratulations to UIC on a hard-fought victory and advancing to the championship match," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "Our team worked so hard tonight and throughout the season. We made massive strides this year. Our seniors Shawna, Hannah, Ally, Jen and Julia have all put their stamp on the program and all have made incredible contributions in their own special ways. We thank each of the seniors for sharing their unique talents with us. We also thank their parents for all of their support over the years."
BETWEEN THE POSTS
- Mimi Stines played a fantastic match. Although she gave up the only goal, she made 11 saves in 26 shots faced.
MATCH SUMMARY
- UIC started off the match controlling the possession battle and forced Stines to make two saves in the first eight minutes.
- The Norse had opportunities in the 10th and 13th minutes, but both were called offside.
- After a shot by Kiley Keehan in the 14th minute, the Flames poured on more offense and attempted six shots in eight minutes, which set the tone for the rest of the half.
- The second half was a much better start for the Norse. Shawna Zaken placed a shot on target in the 47th minute and created a corner kick out of it.
- Shortly following a shot by Lindsey Meyer, the Norse had another corner kick, in which Chloe Mills took an on-goal shot.
- As the second half wore on, NKU's opportunities in the final third became less common, but the Norse defense held strong and forced the game into overtime.
- NKU defended three challenging corner situations to end the first overtime and stretch it into the second.
- UIC's Cassidy Privett scored the golden goal in the 104th minute to win the match.
NORSE NOTES
- Zaken finishes the 2019 campaign with 13 goals on the season, the most by a single Norse in NKU's Division I era.
- Stines finished her strong season between the posts with 97 saves and 5.39 saves per match, both of which are the most ever by a Norse in a season.
- Stines' 11-save performance is a career-best and the most by an NKU player since October 26, 2018, when Emily Lohmann had 11 against UIC.
- NKU finishes the season with a 9-9 record. This is the sixth-straight season that NKU has had a .500 record or better.
