@NKUNorseBSB falls to Western Kentucky in season opener, 9-6

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Western Kentucky on Friday in the season opener for both teams by a final score of 9-6.
 
AT THE PLATE  
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams (L, 0-1) got the start on the mound for the Norse. He went five innings, striking out eight batters and allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits.
  • Tyler Murphy came on in the sixth inning for his collegiate debut. He gave up three runs on five hits.
  • Noah Richardson also made his collegiate debut. He pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out two batters and not allowing a hit.
  • TJ Graves allowed one run in the eighth inning, and Gunnar Barnard got the final out of the inning on the mound.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • WKU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning with one out, but Williams got consecutive outs to keep the Hilltoppers off of the scoreboard.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, WKU crossed the plate five times to go ahead 5-0. The Hilltoppers took advantage of two NKU errors, and WKU's Jake Sanford had a two-run double in the frame.
  • WKU added three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-0 lead. Sanford, Sam McElreath and Kevin Lambert all had RBI singles in the inning for the Hilltoppers.
  • The Norse pushed three runs across in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 8-3. After loading the bases with no outs, Bowden singled to bring home Fisher. In the next at-bat, Luty singled to left field to bring home Hedges and Marion. A wild pitch advanced Luty and Bowden to second and third base, respectively, and Haueter walked to load the bases again. However, WKU got out of the inning without allowing any more runs.  
  • The Norse added another run in the top of the eighth inning. Hedges hit an RBI single in the inning, which allowed Fisher to cross the plate.
  • WKU's Matt Phipps hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 9-4.
  • Bacon led off the ninth inning for NKU with a double, and he scored on a double by Doersching. Griffin Kain entered the game to pinch run for Doersching, and he scored on a single by Fisher. The Norse wouldn't cross the plate again in the frame, and WKU held on to get the 9-6 victory.
