Western Kentucky defeats @NKUNorseBSB in extra innings, 5-4

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon in 10 innings by a final score of 5-4. NKU drops to 0-2 on the year, while WKU improves to 2-0.
 
AT THE PLATE  
ON THE MOUND
  • Kyle Service got the start for the Norse. He went 5.1 innings, striking out five batters while allowing two runs.
  • Cameron Ross went on the mound in the sixth inning and gave up two walks.
  • Joe Martin also entered the game in the sixth inning. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing two runs.
  • Kaleb Meeks (L, 0-1) came on to pitch in the ninth inning. He pitched one inning, giving up one unearned run.
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Norse took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With one out, Luty hit a bunt single. He moved to second base on Haueter's single and scored when Andrew Bacon hit a RBI double down the left field line in the next at-bat. Haueter also crossed the plate in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Griffin Doersching.
  • WKU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jake Sanford hit a triple to lead off the inning, and he scored on an RBI groundout.
  • Fisher led off the top of the sixth inning for NKU with his first career home run to make the score 3-1.
  • WKU scored in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the NKU lead to 3-2. Sanford hit an RBI double in the inning, which scored Davis Sims. Later in the inning, the Hilltoppers loaded the bases, but NKU got out of the jam to prevent any more runs from crossing the plate.
  • The Hilltoppers pushed two runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Jack Wilson hit an RBI single, and Jackson Swiney added a sacrifice fly to give WKU the advantage.
  • NKU tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth. Doersching's RBI groundout allowed Luty to cross the plate to even the score.
  • WKU won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning. With the bases loaded, Kevin Lambert reached on an error, which allowed Sanford to score.
 
NORSE NOTES
  • Haueter has reached base in 34-straight games dating back to last season.
  • The Norse had 10 hits in the contest, compared to eight for WKU.
  • NKU committed one error, while WKU had none.
  • Fisher has started the year 5-of-8 from the plate in his first collegiate season.
