@NKUNorseBSB falls on the road at Tennessee

KNOXVILEE, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Tennessee on Tuesday by a final score of 18-0. NKU drops to 0-4 on the year, while the Volunteers move to 4-0.
 
AT THE PLATE ON THE MOUND
  • Proctor Mercer made his collegiate debut by starting on the mound. He pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and four walks while striking out a batter.
  • Noah Richardson (L, 0-1) came out of the bullpen to pitch in the fourth inning. He went one-third of an inning and was charged with two runs.
  • Kaleb Meeks relieved Richardson. He pitched one inning, allowing two runs.
  • Joe Martin pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one run on one hit. He also struck out a batter.
  • Cameron Ross went on the mound in the seventh inning. He gave up one run on one hit, while also striking out a batter.
  • Tyler Murphy pitched the eighth inning, allowing seven runs.
  • Gunnar Barnard gave up five runs in the eighth inning, but just two were earned.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Tennessee got a runner on second in the first inning with one out, but a double play by the Norse defense ended the frame.
  • NKU put runners on second and third in the top of the second inning. However, Tennessee escaped without allowing a run.
  • The Volunteers loaded the bases in the bottom half of the second, but a fly out ended the inning.
  • Tennessee crossed the plate two times in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 2-0. With the bases loaded, Austin Knight scored on a wild pitch. The Volunteers loaded the bases again, and Connor Pavolony touched home plate when Christian Scott walked.
  • The Volunteers added three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The biggest hit in the inning came on a two-run homer by Luke Lipcius.
  • NKU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but Tennessee got out of the jam without allowing a run.
  • Lipcius hit a RBI triple for Tennessee in the seventh inning to make the score 6-0.
  • Tennessee scored 12 runs in the eighth inning to go ahead 18-0.  
 
GAME NOTES
  • Tennessee had eight hits, compared to five for the Norse.
  • NKU had three errors, while Tennessee didn't commit an error.
  • The Volunteers took advantage of 20 walks in the game.
