Fisher’s walk-off single lifts @NKUNorseBSB to 7-6 win over Youngstown State

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Noah Fisher's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Northern Kentucky University baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon. NKU moves to 3-12 overall and 2-0 in the Horizon League. YSU drops to 1-16 and 0-2 in league play.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Will Haueter batted 3-for-4 at the plate with three doubles, two runs and an RBI.
  • Andrew Bacon was also 3-for-4 in the contest, with two RBI and a run.
  • Fisher finished the game 2-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and a run.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Kyle Service got the start on the mound. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out two batters.
  • Kaleb Meeks came out of the bullpen and pitched 2.2 innings. He allowed just one run on two hits and two walks, while striking out five YSU hitters.
  • Joe Martin (W, 1-0) earned the win on the mound. He surrendered an unearned run and two hits. Martin also struck out three batters.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • YSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Steven D'Eusanio hit an RBI single to score Zach Lopatzka, and Lucas Nasonti added a sacrifice fly that brought home Drew Dickerson.
  • The Norse got a run back in the bottom half of the second. Bacon singled in the inning and stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on the YSU catcher's throw to first base after a wild pitch in the dirt.
  • Jeff Wehler hit a solo home run for the Penguins in the third inning to extend the YSU lead to 3-1.
  • NKU scored two times in the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Haueter led off the inning with a double, and he scored on a double by Doersching. Later in the frame, Doersching came home on a single by Bacon.
  • YSU went ahead 4-3 in the fifth. Zach Lopatka hit an RBI double to score Wehler.
  • NKU tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning. Haueter's double down the left field line scored Collin Luty.
  • The Penguins went ahead 5-4 in the eighth inning. Dylan Swarmer hit an RBI single to score Lopatka.
  • The Norse responded with two runs in the bottom half of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead. Bacon hit an RBI single to score Fisher. Luty reached on an error later in the inning, which allowed pinch runner Trey Bowden to score.
  • YSU tied the game at 6-6 in the ninth. Trevor Wiersma hit an RBI groundout, giving Wehler the opportunity to cross the plate.
  • With one out in the ninth, Haueter hit a double to deep center field. After a strikeout, Fisher stepped up to the plate and delivered a base hit to center field. Haueter scored on the play, giving NKU the 7-6 victory.
 
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Norse had a slight advantage in hits, 11-10.
  • YSU committed three errors, while NKU had one.
  • Haueter is the first NKU player to have three doubles in a game since Cody Kuzniczci accomplished the feat on March 27, 2015. Haueter now has 50 doubles in his career, which puts him in sole possession of fourth place in the NKU record books. He needs eight more doubles to catch Evan McDole, who is the all-time program leader with 58 doubles.
