@NKUNorseBSB splits doubleheader with VMI on Saturday

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team split a doubleheader with VMI on Saturday. VMI won the first game by a score of 8-3, and the Norse picked up a 7-6 win in game two. NKU is now 1-8 on the year, while VMI is 3-9.
 
GAME ONE – VMI 8, NKU 3
AT THE PLATE  
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams (L, 0-3) got the start on the mound. He went 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and seven runs (six earned). Williams also struck out seven batters.
  • Kyle Arganbright came out of the bullpen to get an out in the fifth inning.
  • Noah Richardson pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk, while striking out two hitters.
  • Jordan Menfee went on the mound in the seventh inning. He allowed one run in 0.2 innings.
  • Tyler Murphy recorded the final out of the seventh inning.
  • Tyler Ollier pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • VMI took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Huggins hit an RBI double, and Nathan Loyd and Will Knight each added an RBI sacrifice fly.
  • The Keydets scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead 4-0. Michael Diodato hit an RBI double to score Josh Hollifield.
  • VMI crossed the plate three times in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead.
  • The Norse got a run back in the top of the sixth inning. Haueter hit a single through the left side, which scored Kain.
  • VMI added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Huggins walked to score Cody Warner.  
  • NKU loaded the bases in the ninth inning and crossed the plate twice to make the score 8-3. Hedges and Kain hit back-to-back singles to bring home Luty and Haueter, respectively.
 
 
GAME TWO – NKU 7, VMI 6
AT THE PLATE
  • Haueter went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, two runs and an RBI.
  • Jayden Wakeham had a 2-for-4 showing at the plate with a double and an RBI.
  • Griffin Doersching was 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.
  • Brendan Alas went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.
  • Preston Pilat recorded a double and scored two runs.
 
ON THE MOUND
  • Kyle Service earned the start on the hill. He pitched four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits. He also struck out a batter.
  • Jake Dennis (W, 1-0) came on to pitch in the fifth inning. He threw 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two batters.
  • Kaleb Meeks went 1.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits. He also struck out three hitters.
  • Cameron Ross recorded a save for throwing two scoreless innings. Ross didn't allow a hit, and he struck out three batters.
 
KEY MOMENTS
  • The Norse took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Pilat walked to begin the inning, and he moved over to second on a single by Haueter. Doersching then stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run homer down the left field line. In the next at-bat, Brendan Alas walked, and he went to third on a double by Wakeham. Shane Paradis hit an RBI groundout in the next at-bat to score Alas.
  • NKU added three runs in the fifth inning to go ahead 7-0. With one out in the frame, Pilat doubled down the right field line. Pilat scored on a double by Haueter, and he came home on a double by Brendan Alas. Later in the inning, Doersching scored on an RBI single by Wakeham.
  • VMI scored four runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make the score 7-4. With the bases loaded, Matt Keane walked to bring home Josh Hollifield. A wild pitch scored Don Goodes in the next at-bat. Moments later, Callen Nuccio hit a single to right field to score two runs.
  • The Keydets crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the seventh inning cut the NKU lead to one at 7-6. Huggins hit an RBI single in the inning, and Nuccio scored when Loyd reached on an error.
 
UP NEXT
  • NKU travels to Alabama next weekend for a series. The series begins on Friday, March 8, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.
