@NKUNorseWBB earns No. 5 seed for Motor City Madness with win over Detroit Mercy

DETROIT– Northern Kentucky women's basketball ended the regular season on a four-game winning streak, downing Detroit Mercy 81-63 on the road. The Norse finish the regular season with an 11-17 mark overall and a 10-8 record in Horizon League play. The Titans drop to 4-25 (2-16 Horizon).
 
STAT LEADERS
  • Ally Niece scored a career-high 22 points, going 4-for-8 from 3-point range, and matched her career best of eight rebounds. The rookie point guard also dished out seven assists and nabbed three steals.
  • Grayson Rose recorded the first double-double of her career with 15 points and 10 rebounds, also adding a pair of blocks.
  • Taylor Clos scored 14 points, all in the second half, thanks to a 3-for-4 effort from 3-point range.
  • Molly Glick rounded out NKU's double-digit scorers with 11 points. She also dished out three assists and led the team with four steals.
  • Kailey Coffey joined Rose in double digits on the boards, also pulling down 10 rebounds to go with six points.
 
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
  • NKU came out hot in the first quarter, shooting 63.6 percent while holding Detroit Mercy to just three field goals and 21.4 percent from the field. The Norse defense was headlined by Glick in the opening quarter as she came away with four steals in the span.
  • It was a different story in the second quarter, as the Titans connected at 46.7 percent from the floor while the Norse dropped to 30.8 percent, leaving NKU with a slim one-point advantage at the half, 31-32.
  • Niece had 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals in the first half.
  • The Norse had 15 points off the fast break, while the Titans were not allowed to score quickly at all in transition.
 
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
  • The Norse pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans 30-14, using 4-for-6 shooting from Clos and Niece beyond the arc to aid the offensive effort.
  • NKU continued hot shooting from long range to close out the contest, connecting at 60.0 percent from 3-point range in the fourth quarter.
  • Similar to the start of the game, NKU shot above 60.0 percent in the third quarter, but kept its efficiency high in the fourth at 43.8 percent.
  • The Norse held Detroit Mercy to just seven rebounds in the second half, only two of which were offensive, and surrendered no second-chance points in the half.
 
NORSE NOTES
 
  • The Norse finish with the program's most wins in Horizon League play, with the previous top mark being a 9-9 record in the 2015-16 season.
  • NKU moves to 6-3 all-time versus Detroit Mercy and has won the last five contests.
  • The Norse shot 50.9 percent for the contest, marking the second time this season that NKU has converted on at least half of its field-goal attempts. NKU previously shot 50.0 percent in a 74-55 win over Cleveland State on Feb. 24.
  • The Norse outrebounded the Titans by a wide margin, 42-26, and assisted on 18-of-28 made field goals.

  • Following today's results, Northern Kentucky has earned the No. 5 seed in the 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championship. The Norse will take on No. 4 seed IUPUI on the road on Tuesday, March 5. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET.
