HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's and women's tennis continues the Horizon League slate this weekend as the Norse will host IUPUI on Friday, March 29, followed by UIC on Saturday, March 30. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Lindner Tennis Center at Lunken Playfield in Cincinnati, Ohio, but are subject to change in anticipation of inclement weather. On Friday, the men will have first serve at 11 a.m. with the women to follow at 2:30, while the women start the day on Saturday with the 11 a.m. slot, followed by the men at 2:30.
NKU's men are coming off a 5-2 win over rival Wright State, while the women suffered a 5-2 setback to the Raiders. In the men's match,
Blaine Carr and
Nathan Schwartz secured the doubles point with a 7-5 victory and were later named the Nike® Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week for their performance. Both went on to win in singles action as well, with Schwartz clinching the match out of the No. 2 singles spot. For the women, Margita Sunjic recorded her 15
th career match in which she downed a Horizon League opponent in straight sets, while Maria Koo also picked up a straight-set win in the second flight.
IUPUI's men hold a 10-6 record and have yet to face a league opponent this season. The Jaguars are coming off 6-1 losses to both Butler and Ball State, and have faced a handful of common opponents with the Norse. Like NKU, IUPUI fell by a 7-0 count at Kentucky and defeated Eastern Illinois in a 4-1 decision. However, IUPUI claimed a 4-3 victory over Dayton, which handed the Norse a 5-2 setback. Alex Jochim tops the lineup with a 4-8 record and also teams up with Colton Morehart in doubles, with the pair going 6-8 in the top flight.
IUPUI's women sit at 5-10 this year and are 1-1 in the Horizon League after defeating Detroit Mercy, 4-3, and falling to Oakland, 5-2. The Norse and the Jags have both faced Dayton, with IUPUI blanking the Flyers while the Norse took a 5-2 victory. IUPUI has seen both Gabrielle Ochalk and Christina Stankovic at the top of the lineup, with the latter having more success with a 4-4 record. IUPUI has struggled with doubles action, as only the No. 3 combinations have posted a winning record at 8-6 while the No. 1 and 2 spots have gone a combined 9-20.
The Flames' men's squad is 1-11 on the season, with the lone win of the year coming against Eastern Illinois, 5-2. UIC is looking to snap a six-match losing skid, which included 4-0 setbacks to Northwestern (twice) and Toledo. Nico Wasilewicz and Johan Hedstrom have both appeared in the No. 1 singles spot, with Hedstrom being the only Flame to notch a win atop the lineup. Anthony Nguyen has had the most success in singles action, going 3-6 out of the No. 5 spot for the Flames.
UIC's women are 11-4 and 2-0 in Horizon League competition, winning 7-0 over Detroit Mercy and 6-1 over Oakland. The Flames were favored to claim the Horizon League crown this season and are headlined by Lejla Colic with a 5-8 record at the No. 1 spot while Karyna Bihel sports a 6-6 mark. The bottom of UIC's lineup has been more dominant, with the last three spots going a combined 33-12 this year.
