UIC defeats @NKUNorseBSB on Friday

CHICAGO – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to UIC on Friday by a final score of 16-2. NKU drops to 8-25 and 6-7 in Horizon League play. The Flames move to 14-13 overall and 8-4 in the league.

AT THE PLATE
ON THE MOUND
  • Sam Williams (L, 2-7) got the start on the mound. He was charged with 12 runs (10 earned). He gave up 12 hits and three walks, while striking out four batters.
  • Gunnar Barnard came out of the bullpen to pitch 3.1 innings. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks.

KEY MOMENTS
  • The Flames took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Ryan Hampe hit an infield single in the frame, and Matt Bottcher scored due to an error on the play.
  • UIC added a run in the second inning to go up 2-0. Ryan Lin-Peistrup's RBI single brought home Alex Dee.
  • NKU cut the UIC lead to 2-1 in the top of the third. Haueter's RBI double scored Murray, who had walked earlier in the inning.
  • The Flames' Joshua Figueroa hit a solo home run in the fourth to make the score 3-1.
  • The Norse responded with a run in the top of the fifth. Murray led off the inning with a solo home run, bringing NKU back to within a run at 3-2.
  • UIC scored nine times in the bottom half of the fifth to go ahead 12-2. The biggest hits in the inning came from Hampe, who hit a two-run double and Scott Ota, who hit a grand slam.
  • Ota added a three-run homer in the seventh to give UIC a 15-2 lead.
  • The Flames got their final run in the eighth. A fielding error allowed Bottcher to reach first, and Lane Cobb scored on the play.

GAME NOTES
  • UIC had a 15-9 advantage in hits.
  • The Norse were charged with six errors, while UIC had three.
  • Haueter's double was the 53rd of his career, which puts him in a tie for third place with Justin Rahschulte in the NKU record books. Rahschulte played for the Norse from 1999-2002.
