HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's tennis earned the No. 6 seed for the 2019 Horizon League Men's Tennis Championship, which will be held Friday-Sunday, April 26-28, at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Norse will face No. 3 seed UIC in the first match of the tournament, with first serve set for 11 a.m. Every match of the tournament will be streamed live on ESPN+.
The Norse finished the regular season with a 5-11 record and went 1-5 in Horizon League play, besting nearby rival Wright State in a 5-2 decision for the team's lone league win.
Jorge Rodriguez Agudo led the team in singles wins in league action, going 5-1 out of No. 4 singles.
Nathan Schwartz went 4-2 in league play and moved up to the No. 1 singles spot four matches ago, posting a 2-2 mark in that span and even pushing reigning Horizon League Player of the Year Nico Mostardi to three sets. Rounding out the Norse lineup is
Aleksander Sadal in No. 2 singles,
Blaine Carr in No. 3 singles,
Chris Murray in No. 5 singles and
Felipe Hidalgo in No. 6 singles.
UIC went 4-2 in league action, ending the season with a 4-3 loss to Youngstown State and a 6-1 setback to regular-season champion Cleveland State. Johan Hedstrom sits atop the singles lineup and posted a 3-3 mark against league opponents. However, the Flames have seen the most strength out of the bottom four in the lineup. No. 3 singles player Kasper Parlklo went 4-2 in league play, as did Pelle Strandberg out of the No. 6 spot. Anthony Nguyen has the most wins for the squad, going 5-1 out of the No. 5 spot.
When the two teams met during the regular season, UIC claimed a 5-2 win. Schwartz downed Niko Wasilewicz in the No. 2 singles match, 7-5, 6-3, while Rodriguez Agudo had a 7-5, 6-4 win over Kailash Panchapakesan.
