2019 season comes to a close in #HLBASE championship for @NKUNorseBSB

DAYTON, Ohio – Following Wednesday night's dramatic come-from-behind, ninth-inning walk-off win, Northern Kentucky baseball dropped a pair of decisions to No. 1 Wright State and No. 3 Milwaukee on Thursday to bring its season to a close. The Norse finish 15-42 on the year, while the Panthers improve to 34-20-1.
 
Game 1: Wright State 15, NKU 3
 
At the Plate
  • The Norse recorded six hits in the contest.
  • Seniors Will Haueter and Cole Heavilin drove in runs with their hits, as Haueter had two RBI off his sixth-inning double, and Heavilin clubbed a solo homer in the eighth.
  • Griffin Doersching also added an extra-base hit, doubling in the eighth inning.
  • Andrew Bacon and Colin Hohman each recorded a hit and scored a run.
 
On the Mound
  • Kaleb Meeks started for the Norse, walking four batters and surrendering two earned runs. He falls to 1-4 with the loss.
  • Noah Richardson added 2.2 innings with one strikeout and five walks issued.
  • TJ Graves was next on the mound, tossing 1.1 innings with a strikeout and three walks surrendered.
  • Gunnar Barnard chipped in 0.1 innings of work, and Brendan Alas pitched the final 3.0 innings of the game. Alas struck out four batters and did not walk any.
 
Key Moments
  • Wright State took advantage of five walks in the bottom half of the opening frame, scoring two runs.
  • The Raiders did not register a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Brandon Giltrow led off with a solo home run. That opened up the Wright State offense, as the Raiders plated six more runs off seven more hits.
  • In the fifth inning, Wright State added a pair of runs off an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk.
  • The Norse found some rhythm in the sixth inning as Hohman, Bacon and Haueter clubbed consecutive hits, capped off by Haueter's two-out, two-RBI double to score Hohman and Bacon.
  • A double and a single drove in a run each for Wright State in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Heavilin delivered his first home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning, knocking it over left center field to give NKU its final run of the game.
  • A two-run homer from the 2019 Horizon League Player of the Year, Peyton Burdick, highlighted Wright State's final inning.

  • The Norse recorded a pair of hits and walked five times in the matchup.
  • Collin Luty and Griffin Kain notched NKU's hits, with Luty's coming as a double. Luty scored Northern Kentucky's lone run.
 
On the Mound
  • Kyle Service (1-8) got the start for the Norse, tossing 3.1 innings and surrendering five runs, four of which were earned.
  • Joe Martin pitched 1.2 innings out of the bullpen and Proctor Mercer 3.0. Both NKU pitchers gave up a pair of earned runs.
 
Key Moments
  • Milwaukee got on the board with a run in the first courtesy of an RBI single by Trevor Schwecke.
  • The Panthers tacked on a two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.
  • Northern Kentucky got on the board in the seventh. Luty, who doubled down the left field line with one out, scored when Griffin Kain reached on a wild pitch after striking out.
  • Two more runs for Milwaukee in the bottom half of the seventh resulted in the final score, 9-1.
 
Notes
  • Haueter tied with Evan McDole (2007-10) as NKU's all-time career doubles leader (58). He also finished tied for second in at-bats (774), third in hits (250), sixth in walks (89), seventh in games played (209), eighth in games started (193), ninth in RBI (128) and 10th in runs scored (138).
  • Sam Williams and Martin also wrapped up their NKU careers with their names inked in the record books. Martin made 76 appearances in his career, good for a share of third all-time. He also recorded six saves this season to tie for eighth all-time.
  • Williams made 15 starts this year, second in the single-season record books. He also fanned 93 batters to sit at fifth in the record books.
  • Griffin Doersching sits at fifth on NKU's all-time career home runs list, with 26 after wrapping up his sophomore season.
  • Richardson made 31 appearances in his rookie campaign, making him just the sixth Norse in program history to take the mound in at least 30 games in a single season.
  • Cameron Ross appeared in 72 games during his NKU career, good for sixth all-time.
