HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team earned a series sweep of Oakland with a pair of victories on Sunday. The Norse defeated the Golden Grizzlies by scores of 12-3 and 14-3. NKU also picked up an 11-10 win against Oakland yesterday. The Norse improve to 13-34 overall and 11-13 in the Horizon League. Oakland drops to 10-30 on the year and 8-13 in the league.
GAME ONE: NKU 12, Oakland 3
AT THE PLATE
ON THE MOUND
- Sam Williams (W, 4-7) got the start on the mound and earned the win. He pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. He also struck out 10 hitters.
- Joe Martin pitched a scoreless eighth inning. He allowed two hits and a walk, while also striking out two batters.
- Gunnar Barnard held Oakland scoreless in the ninth inning. He gave up just a hit and a walk.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Norse took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Luty's double brought home Noah Fisher, who hit a triple earlier in the frame. Luty also crossed the plate in in the inning on an RBI double by Jewell.
- NKU added two runs in the third inning to go ahead 4-0. Haueter led off the inning with a solo home run, and Doersching scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Pilat.
- Oakland got a run back in the bottom of the third on Jace Matkin's solo home run.
- The Golden Grizzlies made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth on Blake Griffith's solo home run.
- Matt Dileo's solo home run got Oakland within one run at 4-3 in the seventh inning.
- NKU got two insurance runs in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 6-3. With runners on second and third, Murray hit an RBI single to center field to bring home Pilat. The Norse loaded the bases later in the frame, and Haueter walked to score Murray.
- NKU tacked on six more runs in the top of the ninth to go ahead 12-3. Pilat's RBI double brought home Bacon, and Murray hit a two-run single to score Fisher and Pilat. Later in the inning, Haueter and Doersching hit back-to-back RBI singles with the bases loaded to give Murray and Jewell the opportunity to cross the plate. The final run came from Hedges, who scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Bacon.
GAME TWO: NKU 14, Oakland 3
AT THE PLATE
- Bacon batted 3-for-3 with two doubles, four RBI and a run.
- Luty went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs.
- Haueter was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
- Doersching also went 2-for-4. He had a double, two RBI and a run.
- Billy Marion, Brennan Gick and Pilat also recorded a hit in the game.
ON THE MOUND
- Proctor Mercer (W, 2-4) started the series finale and earned the win. He went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks. He also struck out a pair of batters.
- Noah Richardson pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks. Richardson also recorded four strikeouts.
- Tyler Murphy threw a scoreless ninth inning. He gave up just one hit and struck out two batters.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Norse went ahead 2-0 in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Oakland's pitcher was called for a balk, which allowed Pilat to score on the play. Later in the frame, Bacon hit a sacrifice fly to score Haueter.
- NKU added three runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0. The Norse loaded the bases, and Bacon hit a two-run double to bring in Pilat and Luty. In the next at-bat, Wakeham hit an RBI groundout to score Haueter.
- Oakland got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-2. Mario Camilletti hit a two-run homer in the frame.
- The Norse responded by getting four runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 9-2. Haueter hit an RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded, and in the next at-bat, Doersching extended the lead with a two-run double to bring home Haueter and Luty. Doersching also scored in the inning on an RBI double by Bacon.
- NKU added four runs in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Cole Heavilin and Brendan Alas drew back-to-back walks. Luty hit a two-run double in the next at-bat to give the Norse a 13-2 lead.
- Oakland got a run back in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 13-3. Drew Demumbrum scored on Austin Tangney's sacrifice fly.
- The Norse scored their final run in the top of the ninth to go ahead 14-3. With one out, Marion hit a triple down the right field line, and he scored in the inning on a wild pitch.
NOTES
- This was the second-straight outing for Williams in which he struck out at least 10 hitters. Williams recorded 12 strikeouts against Milwaukee on April 26.
- The Norse recorded their second Horizon League series sweep of the season. NKU also swept Youngstown State in a series from March 15-17.
