HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky men's soccer team won their first game of the 2019 campaign, 2-0, against Canisius on Sunday at Demske Sports Complex.
"It was a much needed result and performance after a disappointing result on Friday night," said head coach Stu Riddle. "Our big players stepped up and we know we can enter conference play full of confidence after a good win on the road."

MATCH SUMMARY
-
After taking nearly 15 minutes for both sides to get settled in, NKU found its footing and had a vice grip on the possession battle. Within the span of a minute, the Norse had three shots get off, with one on goal by Gianni Bouzoukis.
-
An NKU goal was only a matter of time with how well the Norse attacked. At the 33rd minute, Connor Probert slipped a shot underneath the keeper in the bottom-left corner of the goal to put the Norse up, 1-0.
-
As the half closed, NKU continued having quality shots, most notably one by Probert that was saved in the middle of the posts.
-
Canisius opened the second half with a better attack, keeping goalkeeper Baj Maan on his toes, but the Norse defense ultimately prevailed as the offense eventually started taking over possession in the late minutes of the game. Maan had four saves in the second half before the 80-minute mark.
-
In the 79th minute, Probert crossed the ball over to Sallows on the near-side of the penalty area. Sallows then found Willis ready to send a shot down the middle of the goal and give the Norse a 2-0 cushion.
-
NKU fell back after the goal and focused more on completing passes in its attack with the win almost in hand. Bouzoukis and Probert would each get a shot off by the end of the match.
