Second-half surge sends @NKUNorseMBB to 71-62 win over Green Bay


GREEN BAY, Wisc. –The Northern Kentucky men's basketball team took down Green Bay, 71-62, on Friday night at the Kress Center. The Norse are now 15-7 on the year and move to 7-3 in conference play, while Green Bay is 10-13 overall and 5-5 in league action.

STATS LEADERS

  • Bryson Langdon poured on 22 points partly in thanks to superb three-point shooting at a 5-of-7 (71 percent) clip from beyond the arc.
  • Jalen Tate put together a 17-point, 12-board effort. The junior shot 7-of-13 (54 percent) from the floor.
  • In his first game back from injury, Dantez Walton had a double-double performance, scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
  • Trevon Faulkner rounded out the double-figures parade with 10 points to go along with his six boards.
TURNING POINT
  • Trailing 53-47 with 9:06 left in the game, NKU scored 15 unanswered points over the next three minutes to assume control of the game. Tyler Sharpe began the run with a pair of three throws before Walton and Langdon alternated a pair of 3-pointers each.

FIRST HALF SUMMARY

  • A layup by Tate during the first possession kicked things off for NKU. Walton then reached the line and made a shot for his first point in 10 games after missing them to injury. Tate followed the freebie up with a converted and-one attempt to give the Norse an early 6-5 lead.
  • The Norse hung onto the lead as Sharpe dished to the left side for a Langdon triple. Langdon's success continued on the next possession as he brought in a layup in transition with 13:27 left.
  • Green Bay went on to score eight unanswered-points to take a 23-15 lead. Faulkner ended the run with a tough driving-layup to cut the deficit to two possessions.
  • After another layup by Tate, Faulkner stormed down a couple of possessions later and made a basket while being fouled. The Norse sophomore then went to the line and made a free throw to bring NKU's deficit to the Green Bay to 27-25 with 5:14 to go in the half.
  • Langdon had the last seven points of the half for NKU beginning with a three-pointer at the 1:54 mark. He then went to the line on two separate occasions and sank four free-throws.
  • The Norse went into the break trailing 34-32. Green Bay was held to just 14-of-38 (37 percent) shooting from the floor and a 3-of-13 (23 percent) mark from beyond the arc thanks to exceptional defense to close out the half.

SECOND HALF SUMMARY

  • Green Bay started strong with two-straight baskets before Faulkner scored thanks to his aggressiveness in transition. He hauled in a layup with 18:30 to go and then went to the line on the next possession and split the pair.
  • Tate's outstanding first-half start resumed into the second half as he made another pair of layups as NKU trailed 43-39 at the 15:47 mark.
  • NKU kept making a concerted effort to score in the paint and eventually regained the lead with 11:46 to go after layups by Sharpe, Walton and Nelson.
  • Trailing by six points with 8:43 left in the game, NKU fired off over the course of 1:25 for an 11-0 run, which included a pair of three-pointers by Walton and another triple by Langdon.
  • The unanswered run pressed further by another four points after a free throw by Nelson and another three-point bomb by Langdon off a feed by Tate. NKU was in control with a 62-53 lead with just over six minutes of action left.
  • After back-to-back buckets by the Phoenix, the Norse piled on another seven points without an answer through four free-throws by Walton and Langdon's fifth three-ball of the night, giving NKU its largest lead at 12 with 2:50 left in the contest.

GAME NOTES

  • Tate is now one of the top-50 all-time NKU scorers with 771 career points, good for 49th.
  • Adding onto the Tate hype-train, this is his second career double-double. He had 13 points and 10 boards versus Milwaukee last year on January 26. That game also served as his previous-best in rebounding (10), which was broken by tonight's 12-board effort.
  • This is also the first game since the January 26, 2019 matchup against Milwaukee that NKU had two players with a double-double.
  • This is back-to-back games where Tate passes his season-high in points. He had 16 a week ago against Wright State. The recent success moves his season average up to 10.5 points.
  • Langdon's 22 points are a new career-high, breaking his previous best of 21 against Oakland on January 5.
  • Langdon has seen an uptick in production as of late as he's averaging 13 points in the last 7 contests.
