GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team (0-6, 0-0 HL) fell to Furman (4-3, 0-0 Southern), 13-4, on Saturday afternoon at Latham Stadium. Rob Hughes (W, 1-0) gets the win for the Paladins, while Jared Flueck (L, 0-1) is tagged with the loss for the Norse.
AT THE PLATE
- John Odom had two RBI of the day for NKU, going 2-for-3 on the day. The RBI in the seventh was the first of Odom's career, moving his average up to .416 (5-for-12).
- Sam Hedges (1-for-5) and Jayden Wakeham (1-for-2) each batted a double in the contest. Hedges represented one of the Norse runs.
- Andrew Bacon (1-for-4) and Tyler Wagner (1-for-3) also had a hit each.
- Luke Murray made his debut as a Norse, being one of the scoring runs in the ninth.
ON THE MOUND
- Flueck threw for the first 4.2 innings of the contest, allowing two earned and four total runs. He gave up eight hits, a pair of walks and tossed a pair of strikeouts.
- Noah Richardson went two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs off of a hit and a couple of walks.
- Nick Noble was on the mound for a third inning and allowed a couple runs and two walks.
- Tyler Keith allowed a run and a walk, failing to retire a batter.
- Proctor Mercer worked the mound for 1.1 innings, giving up three runs on as many hits and a couple walks.
- Tyler Ollier closed things out for NKU, allowing a run off of one hit and a walk.
KEY MOMENTS
- Furman's first two scores of the afternoon came after two reached through a double to left-center and a fielding error by Doersching. A sacrifice fly scored one and an infield single scored the other a couple of at-bats later.
- Hedges had a two-out double in the third to get things going for the Norse. Jake Murray then reached second on a throwing error, scoring Hedges on the play.
- After a pair of scoreless frames, NKU went through four pitchers in the sixth and gave up five runs, two of which came from a walk with the bases loaded.
- JT McGee got on base in the seventh after being hit by a pitch. The junior was tagged out on the next at-bat after Brennan Gick reached on a fielder's choice. After a wild pitch put Gick on second, Odom singled up the middle to score the second NKU run of the afternoon.
- Furman's half of the seventh saw three runs score thanks in part to three-straight hits. The three runners came home after a walk and two batters being hit by a pitch. The Paladins scored one more run an inning later to wrap up their afternoon.
- Two runs came in for NKU in ninth. Luke Murray was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning followed by a walk for McGee. A ground out by Gick placed the pair on second and third before Odom singled past first base to score Murray. Hedges plated the final score by reaching through a 5-4 fielders choice, bringing McGee home.
