DAYTON, Ohio - Northern Kentucky men's tennis fell on Saturday evening to nearby rival Dayton, 6-1. Despite the final score, the match was tightly contested as five of the six singles matches were decided in three sets. NKU falls to 3-5 overall with the setback while the Flyers advance to 4-6.
Match Notables
- The Norse won the opening point with wins on the first and third courts. In No. 3 doubles, Andrew Niehaus and Jorge Rodriguez Agudo bested Steven Karl and Jayan Jhattu, 6-2, before Emilien Burnel and Nathan Schwartz clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Connor Bruce and Joe DeMarco in the top flight.
- The No. 1 through 5 singles matches all went three sets.
- Schwartz won the opening set against Bruce in No. 1 singles, 6-4, before his opponent took the second sets, 6-3, 6-4.
- Burnel also won his opening set, defeating Karl 6-3 in the No. 2 matchup. Karl then took the ensuing sets, 6-3, 6-2.
- Brandon Ponomarew went two extended 7-5 sets against Joe DeMarco in No. 5 singles, winning the first and dropping the second. DeMarco posted a 6-1 third-set win to take the point.
- Rodriguez Agudo also had a pair of extended sets in his No. 4 match against Georgi Mavrodiev. The Flyer won the first set, 7-6, while Rodriguez Agudo won the second, 7-5. Mavrodiev then won the deciding pro set, 1-0.
- In the No. 3 singles match, Niehaus dropped a 6-0 opening set, but bounced back to push a third with a 6-3 win in the second set against Matt DeMarco. However, his opponent won the third, 6-3.
Northern Kentucky is set to host in-state foe Bellarmine on Saturday, Feb. 29. First serve against the Knights is set for 4:30 p.m. at Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
