@NKUNorseWSOC roughs up Raiders in season finale

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team took down Horizon League rival Wright State 2-1 on the road Wednesday evening. The Norse improve to 9-7-2 overall and 7-4 in conference. The Raiders drop to 5-10-3 this season and 3-6-2 in conference play.
 
Sheehan's Statement
"Our team played an outstanding match tonight. We competed all over the field and played with the intensity that it takes to win. Congratulations to Megan Sullivan, who had a big night with a goal and an assist, and to Lydia Self, who scored the game winner. Mimi Stines came up with an outstanding penalty kick save as well. It was fantastic to score two goals and to create several other excellent opportunities to score. Overall, it was a fantastic team effort defensively as well. This will provide us with some momentum entering the tournament."
 
Scoring Summary
·     Megan Sullivan netted the early goal for the Norse in the 6' as her second shot in the box found its' way to the back of the net.  
·     Lydia Self increased the NKU lead in the 27' off a corner kick from Sullivan and Self rocketed a shot high and to the right for the goal. 
·     An own goal was credited against the Norse in the 52' as a corner kick into the box by Wright State could not be handled by Stines.  

Between the Posts
·      Mimi Stines (8-7-2) took the field in goal for the Norse, making six saves on the night and facing 16 shots. 
·      Erin Baker (2-3-1) got the start for the Raiders in goal, making six total saves, seeing 13 shots and allowed two goals. 

Match Summary
·      Kaya Vogt looked to test the Raider goalkeeper early, firing a shot off in the opening minute. 
·      Lily Menssen kept the aggressive offensive attack going with a shot on goal of her own in the 3'. 
·      Menseen was at it again in the 5' with a high shot on goal that forced Baker to make a save. 
·      Sullivan fired off a shot in the 6' that was blocked by a WSU defender in the box, however she kept her composure and struck the ball again, only to this time finding the back of the net.
·      Sofia Wilmes attempted her first shot of the night in the 9' and missed wide left. 
·      The Raiders posted their first shot of the evening in the 11' that was blocked by NKU defenders. 
·      Lindsey Meyer saw her first attempt at goal in the 12' that ultimately missed right. 
·      Sullivan looked for a second goal in the 16' as she shot low and to the left, but Baker was there for the save. 
·      Wright State attempted a pair of shots in the 17' and 18', the first of which was on goal and saved by Stines. 
·      Shelby Wall looked to increase the Norse lead with a shot on goal in the 22', however her low shot was scooped up by WSU. 
·      Self doubled the NKU lead with a goal in the 27' with the assist from Sullivan. 
·      WSU took a penalty kick in the 30' which resulted in a Stines save as the NKU goalkeeper made the correct read to make the stop.
·      The Raiders kept trying to test Stines in goal with another shot in the 33' but the Norse defense stood tall once again. 
·      NKU saw an own goal credited against themselves in the 52' as a corner kick could not be handled in the box and crossed the goal line.
·      Wright State continued to put pressure on the NKU defense with another shot on shot in the 60'. 
·      The Raiders fired another shot off in the 72' but the Norse defense blocked the shot.
·      WSU looked to turn up the heat on the NKU defense with multiple shots in the 87' with a final shot being saved by Stines. 

Norse Notes
·      Sullivan's goal tonight was the first of her collegiate career with the Norse. 
·      Sullivan's assist was her second of the year. 
·      Wright State out-shot the Norse 16-13, however NKU posted more shots on goal with eight. 
·      Self scored her third goal of the season this evening. 

Up Next
Northern Kentucky now looks ahead to the Horizon League Tournament which sees the Norse as the No. 3 seed. NKU will host a quarterfinal matchup against No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday, Oct. 31 from NKU Soccer Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
