Wilmes moves @NKUNorseWSOC past Robert Morris in double-overtime, 1-0

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team kicked off the 2020-21 campaign with a 1-0 win over Robert Morris in double-overtime.

"Robert Morris is a strong team with some special players," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "It is always good to earn three points on the road. Coming off of a 15-month period in which we played no matches, we were pleased that we developed as a team as the match wore on.

"We defended well and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities. Kailey Ivins and Chloe Mills were both outstanding in their respective roles today. Lindsey Meyer was fantastic throughout the match. With Lindsey's strong play throughout the match, it was fitting that she played the final ball into Sofia Wilmes. Sofia demonstrated quality and composure in scoring the golden goal. Overall, it was a terrific win for the team with many players making strong contributions today."

NKU SCORING SUMMARY

  • Wilmes scored the game-winner in double-overtime in the 104th minute to give NKU its first win of the season.

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Mimi Stines picked up where she left off a season ago, facing 13 shots and making five saves in her shutout performance.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • NKU started off on the attack, receiving a corner-kick opportunity 31 seconds into the game. Trammel, a freshman defender, placed a shot on goal to open the new season in the first minute.
  • Robert Morris fought back a minute later and found an on-target shot, but Stines stuffed it.
  • Ivins and Kaya Vogt both sent shots down the middle in the 16th and 21st-minutes, respectively, but RMU's keeper made the save on each.
  • Mills had a shot hit the right-woodwork of the goal in the 22nd minute.
  • Meyer added another on-target attempt at the 39-minute mark, but the game remained scoreless.
  • NKU and RMU were still knotted up at zero heading into the half.
  • RMU's keeper was forced to make her fifth save on the afternoon in the 56th minute with Vogt striking a shot to the bottom-center of the goal.
  • Alexis Trammel and Annie Greene each had a pair of shots reach the keeper in the 66th and 70th minutes of the match.
  • The pressure continued from NKU as the Norse were on the receiving end of back-to-back corners in the 71st minute, but no shot opportunities came from them.
  • The story was the same for the rest of regulation. The Norse pelted five shots that went off target before the 90-minute mark. Meyer had the only good chance with 34 seconds left in the game, targeting the bottom-left corner of the posts.
  • Nothing worked out offensively for the Norse in the first overtime period after a pair of corner kicks and a shot by Meyer. Luckily, NKU's back line held on to push the match into a second overtime.
  • Three in a half minutes into the second overtime, Meyer pressured RMU's keeper with another shot on goal, Wilmes finished the job with a pass from Meyer to win the game at 104-minute mark.

NORSE NOTES

  • With five saves in the game, Mimi Stines surpasses 100-career saves (102). She is the fastest player in Division I history to reach that milestone, reaching it in 19 games to Emily Lohmann's 26.
  • The win is the first overtime win for the Norse since defeating Detroit Mercy in two overtimes on Sept. 30, 2018.
  • Going back to last season, this is back-to-back games with 10 or more shots on goal. NKU had 12 vs. UIC last season in the Horizon League semifinals on Nov. 7, 2019 and had 10 today.
  • The Norse shutout is the first since a Nov. 1, 2019 matchup at Detroit Mercy.
  • Lindsey Meyer surpassed 1,000-career minutes played in today's game.
  • Meyer's assist is the third of her career.
  • Trammel, Greene and Vogt each made their first-career starts in the game. Wilmes and Allison King made their first appearances as Norse.
