Dayton edges out @NKUNorseWSOC, 2-1, in final minutes

MASON, Ohio – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team (1-1, 1-0 Horizon) lost a hard-fought match to Dayton (2-0, 0-0 Atlantic 10), 2-1, at Wall2Wall Indoor Soccer on Wednesday afternoon.

"Thank you to Eric Golz for scheduling this match with us yesterday and working through many logistics on such short notice," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "Congratulations to Dayton on scoring two late goals, which was obviously the difference in the game.

"Kailey Ivins had a fantastic goal and there were a lot of strong individual performances today. Collectively, our team played well in a competitive environment, but there are some great learning opportunities from this match."

NKU SCORING SUMMARY

  • Ivins scored her first goal of the 2020-21 campaign in the 27th minute of the match.

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Mimi Stines played the entire match at goal, facing eight shots, making four saves and allowing both goals.

  • In the 27th minute of the match, Ivins drilled an unassisted shot from the left-center edge of the penalty area to the top-left corner of the goal, making it a 1-0 game in favor of NKU.
  • Lindsey Meyer received a yellow card in the 28th minute.
  • Each side looked for an edge with substitutions to end the half, but the Norse went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
  • After Dayton easily had the possession battle won for the first half, NKU took control in the second.
  • Although it was a little off to the right, Annie Greene took a great shot attempt in the 49th minute.
  • Meyer and Morgan Jewell each attempted shots that went high in the 56th and 57th minutes, respectively.
  • NKU battled hard in the final-third throughout the early stages in the half before Dayton adjusted. A corner for the Flyers in the 78th minute led to an offensive push that gave them the equalizer a minute later.
  • The pressure in NKU's defensive-third continued as Stines made a tough save in the 85th minute. Dayton grabbed the game-winner just a minute later to go up 2-1.
  • Despite an intense effort by NKU and a Chloe Mills attempt in the 89th minute to send it into overtime, the Norse fell just short of keeping the game alive.

NORSE NOTES

  • Ivins' goal is the fifth of her career. She is now one point away from 20 on her career as a Norse.
