NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team (2-3) and Belmont (2-1) split a pair of seven-inning games at Rose Park on Friday. Belmont surged in the sixth of game one to win, 5-4, while Northern Kentucky erased an eight-run gap in the final two innings of game two to win, 11-10.

GAME 1: Belmont 5, Northern Kentucky 4

AT THE PLATE

  • Jayden Wakeham went 2-for-3 in game one, including a three-run homer.
  • Andrew Bacon had the other RBI in the game, finishing out the contest 1-for-3.
  • Treyvin Moss had the only other hit in the game for NKU.

ON THE MOUND

  • Ben Gerl went scoreless for the first-five innings, but gave up four runs on as many hits in 5.1 frames on the bump.
  • Tyler Ollier (L, 0-1) tossed the final two-thirds of an inning, allowing the winning run and two hits.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Norse stormed through the fourth inning for the opening scores of the game. Bryce Thomas reached through a walk and Griffin Doersching was intentionally walked, putting Thomas in scoring position.  Bacon then brought Thomas home with a single up the middle to give the Norse a 1-0 advantage.
  • On the next at-bat, Wakeham belted a home run to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • In its half of the fourth, Belmont tacked on one run with a solo shot to right.
  • A pair of singles and an RBI double ended Gerl's day in the bottom of the sixth. Belmont then singled and tripled with Ollier on the mound to win game one.

GAME 2: Northern Kentucky 11, Belmont 10

  • Kurt Lange (W, 1-0) picked up his first win as a Norse, giving up one run on two hits and punching out five.

KEY MOMENTS

  • With two outs and none on in the top of the first, Doersching blasted a home run to centerfield, giving the Norse a 1-0 lead.
  • Two singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Belmont in its half of the first, allowing a sacrifice fly to score one and tie the game. The inning ended before the Bruins could add more damage to the scoreboard.
  • The Belmont side of the third was a fruitful one for the Bruins. A triple, a single and a home run, respectively, drove a total of four runners home.
  • The Norse made the switch to Bryson Lonsbury on the mound, but the Bruins tacked on three more runs before Blaine Walters checked in to end the inning.
  • Back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth put runners on the corners for Belmont. Walters made a pickoff attempt that allowed the Bruins to steal home to make it 9-1.
  • Hedges led off the sixth with a single and Doersching made it runners on first and third with a double to left field.
  • NKU then scored on three-straight at-bats thanks to a Wakeham single, a double from Hall and a triple from McFadden-Ackman, respectively, plating five runs.
  • Brandt grounded out to second base to score McFadden-Ackman before the end of the Norse sixth, making it a 9-7 game in favor of Belmont.
  • The Bruins added one more run in the sixth with a homer to left.
  • In the final inning, an error that put Hedges on and a single up the middle by Gick kept the comeback hopes alive. Bacon plated Hedges with a single of his own to make it a two-run game.
  • Wakeham held steady in a 3-2 count and snatched a walk, jamming the bases full. McFadden-Ackman followed with a walk of his own to score Gick, making it 10-9 Belmont.
  • Pinch-hitting for Brandt, Moss had the game-winning blooper to right, bringing home Bacon and a pinch-running John Odom
