@NKUNorseWSOC picks up 2-0 win over Cleveland State, remains undefeated in league play

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team (4-1-1, 4-0-1 Horizon League) stays unbeaten in Horizon League action after shutting out Cleveland State, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at NKU Soccer Stadium.

"Cleveland State's always a challenging game," said head coach Bob Sheehan. "I thought our players did an incredible job. I thought defensively we did very good as we didn't give up many shots in the box. We gave up some shots from outside the box that really weren't dangerous, but when they did get closer in the danger area, I thought Chloe, Lily and our whole back line were fantastic.

"We adjusted really nicely at halftime in terms of how we were going to defend. When we pushed Kaya a little deeper in the second half, she made a major impact on the game. Then, one of our Cleveland girls, Kayla Wypasek, came in and was a huge difference maker scoring the second goal."

NKU SCORING SUMMARY

BETWEEN THE POSTS

  • Mimi Stines played the entire match in goal, facing nine shots and making four saves.

MATCH SUMMARY

  • NKU went ahead in a hurry, as Meyer sent a deep cross from the midfield in the fourth minute to Ivins on the far side, who baited the Vikings' keeper and passed to Wilmes with a wide-open goal.
  • Cleveland State settled back in after the goal, entering the final third at a decent rate, but NKU's back line Chloe Mills, Taylor Abbott, Lily Menssen and Morgan Jewell held steady, swarming any forward in possession of the ball.
  • Wilmes dished to Meyer within the penalty area in the 28th minute, but a cross intended for Keehan was cut off by the keeper.
  • After a quiet end to the first half, a Cleveland State corner in the 47th minute put the Norse in danger, but Stines suppressed a shot attempt in the box by diving onto the ground.
  • Meyer took an on-target shot from the edge of the final third in the 54th minute.
  • In the 73rd minute, Keehan bopped a pass up to Meyer, who was next to the keeper on the near side. Meyer made the extra pass backwards to an open Wypasek, who netted a shot to the lower-left corner of the goal.
  • Cleveland State took just one shot for the rest of the game, which missed high in the 80th minute.

NORSE NOTES

  • Keehan notches her fifth assist in her career. It is her first assist since she had two in NKU's 5-1 rout of Green Bay on Oct. 27, 2019.
  • Stines is the first Norse keeper since Emily Lohman on Sept. 22 and 26 to record back-to-back shutouts.
  • Stines also picks up the fifth clean sheet of her career, moving her goals against average down to 0.48 and her save percentage up to .864.
