Gerl’s quality start secures 5-3 win for @NKUNorseBSB over Milwaukee

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky baselball (6-10, 4-5 Horizon League) opened its weekend series against Milwaukee (2-10, 2-3 Horizon League) with a 5-3 victory at Bill Aker Baseball Complex on Friday.
 
AT THE PLATE  
  • Sam Hedges and Treyvin Moss each had a hit apiece.  
  • Jackson Haas and Griffin Doersching had two and three hits, respectively. 
  • Doersching's homerun in the eighth inning gave him his sixth of the year. 
  • 11 Norse batters reached base after being walked. The same number of runners were left on base, compared to only six for Milkwaukee. 
ON THE MOUND  
  • Ben Gerl (W, 1-2) started on the mound for the Norse and pitched 7.0 innings. Gerl threw an astounding 115 pitches while facing 29 batters and allowed two earned runs on six hits, while fanning seven Panthers. 
  • Tyler Ollier (S, 2) was on the mound for the final two innings, dishing two scoreless innings of relief for the save. 
KEY MOMENTS  
  • Milwaukee had the first score in its half of the second with a two-run homer to centerfield. 
  • An inning later, another run was scored by the Panthers on a screamer through the middle that saw the batter reach first, making it, 3-0. 
  • The bases loaded up for the Norse in the fourth inning after two walks followed a Haas single to left. Thomas walked to bring Haas home for the first NKU score.
  • The following inning saw Doersching, on through a single, reach home by way of an RBI-single from Haas. 
  • Northern Kentucky scored two runs in the sixth, taking the lead, 4-3. A pair of wild pitches brought a walked Odom home and a single from Hedges drove in Fisher, who also reached through a walk, respectively. 
  • Doersching hit a shot to right field that made it over the wall in the eighth inning, extending the Norse lead to 5-3. 
UP NEXT  
The Norse continue their series with Milwaukee with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday. The first game will see seven innings while the second is scheduled for nine. Both contests can be viewed on ESPN+.
