Highland Heights, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's men's tennis heads to Cleveland, Ohio, where it squares off against the Vikings of Cleveland State April 17 and 18, at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion. Both matches are set to start at 2 p.m.
NKU is coming off of a weekend sweep over UIC to remain undefeated in league play, 4-0, and move up to 8-1 overall. On Saturday, the Norse picked up the doubles point with
Santiago Casamayor and
Brandon Ponomarew (No. 3) winning 6-4 and
Emilien Burnel and
Andrew Niehaus (No. 1) defeating their opponents 7-5.
Jorge Rodriguez (No. 4) picked up the first singles point that day 6-3, 7-5 followed by Niehaus (No. 3) finishing 6-4, 7-6 (5),
Trevor Ball (No. 6) winning 6-3, 6-1, and Burnel (No. 1) with a three-set battle of 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Casamayor finished off the scoring for the Norse, defeating his opponent in a same-set score of 6-4 and securing the overall win 6-1.
On Sunday, the Norse closed out the series with another overall score of 6-1. They earned the doubles point again with Casamayor and Ponomarew topping their opponents 6-1 and Burnel and Niehaus soon following to securing the point with a 6-3 decision. Burnel then went on to claim the first singles victory that day, topping his opponent 6-3, 6-1. Ball followed, winning 6-3, 6-1, then Casamayor won in another same-set score of 6-4 to clinch the Norse win. Ponomarew posted a 6-3, 6-4 win. Burnel and Niehaus' performance in doubles play earned them Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week for their first time.
The Vikings currently sit at 12-4 overall, and 4-0 in conference play. Their last set of games were against Youngstown State, claiming both matches 6-1. CSU was picked to finish first overall in the Horizon League preseason poll.
In the last meeting between the two teams on April 13, 2019, the Norse fell to the Vikings, 6-1.
