HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky Baseball team (9-12, 7-7 Horizon League) split a doubleheader with Purdue Fort Wayne (8-12, 5-9 Horizon League) on Friday afternoon at separate locations of World Baseball Academy and Parkview Field. The Mastodons claimed the seven-inning game one, 14-0, while NKU pulled off a come-from-behind 5-4 win in game two. The victory is also head coach Todd Asalon's 700th win as a head coach.
GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 14, Northern Kentucky 0
AT THE PLATE
- Griffin Doersching went 1-for-2 in the game to go along with a walk. He had the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for NKU.
- Andrew Bacon was also 1-for-2 with a walk.
- Treyvin Moss had the only other hit, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk.
ON THE MOUND
- Ben Gerl, (L, 1-3) pitched the first three innings, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits and a walk.
- Tyler Murphy tossed an inning of relief, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk.
- Bryce Smith closed out the game, pitching the final two innings on the mound. Two runs off of five hits plated on his watch.
KEY MOMENTS
- After a single and a walk put two on for the Mastodons in the opening inning, a home run gave Purdue Fort Wayne the early 3-0 lead.
- Five singles, one player being hit by a pitch and a passed ball added five runs to the Mastodons' effort in the second.
- Purdue Fort Wayne drilled a solo homer in the third.
- A leadoff walk followed by a home run gave the Mastodons two more runs, making it, 11-0.
- Three-straight hits to begin the sixth helped the Mastodons add three more runs of insurance in the sixth.
GAME 2: Northern Kentucky 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 4
AT THE PLATE
- Griffin Doersching went 1-for-3, blasting a game-winning two-run homer.
- Sam Hedges (1-for-3, BB) and Andrew Bacon (1-for-4, 2B) each drove in a runner.
- Josh Romans was 2-for-4 in the game, which included a double.
- Trevin Moss (1-for-4) was the only other Norse to register a hit in the contest.
ON THE MOUND
- Noah Richardson (W, 2-0) had another fantastic start on the mound for the Norse, going seven-innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits and three walks. He also delivered nine strikeouts in the game, pushing his K/9 in his last two appearances to a blistering 14.8.
- Tyler Ollier went two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on a hit and three walks.
- Nick Noble (S, 1) tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to get the save. He allowed a hit and a walk while fanning three batters.
KEY MOMENTS
- With runners on the corners in the opening inning, Purdue Fort Wayne plated its first run through a throwing error.
- The Mastodons had a runner on second after a single and a stolen base in the third. A bloop single to right-center drove the runner home, giving Purdue Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead.
- Hedges was patient and generated a leadoff walk in the sixth and Bacon doubled to left-center to bring him home, trimming NKU's deficit to 2-1.
- The Norse came back and then some an inning later. Moss started things off with an infield single, Liam McFadden-Ackman was walked and Romans had a base-hit drop into left field to load up the bases.
- Hedges reached through fielder's choice, but Purdue Fort Wayne's third basemen committed a throwing error looking for the double play, scoring Moss.
- A wild pitch gave NKU another run to score Romans, putting the Norse into the lead at 3-2.
- Doersching followed the wild pitch by ripping a two-run bomb that hit the apartment building well over 400 feet outside of left field.
- Purdue Fort Wayne came back with two more runs in the eighth, making it a one-run game at 5-4.

- NKU wraps up the series with another doubleheader against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. Game one will begin at 11:30 a.m.
