INDIANAPOLIS – Northern Kentucky guard
A'lahn Sumler has been named the Horizon League Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week after helping the Norse to a perfect 2-0 slate against in-state rival Eastern Kentucky and Miami-Hamilton, as announced by the league office on Monday.
In his first extended run of the season, Sumler went off in the Norse's two win's last week. He went for 12 points in back-to-back contests to go with setting new career-highs across the board.
Over the two-win week, Sumler averaged 12.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal. He shot 8-of-12 (.667) from the field, which included a mark of 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
In NKU's win on Wednesday night against in-state foe EKU, Sumler hit three's with 6:04 (53-50 NKU), 3:06 (58-55 NKU) and 1:27 (61-58 NKU) left in the contest as a driving force in the Norse's victory.
Coming into the week, Sumler appeared in just five minutes of action. He competed for 21 minutes on Wednesday and another 17 on Sunday in NKU's blowout win over Miami-Hamilton.
The Waterbury, Connecticut native set new career-bests in points (12), minutes (21), made field goals (4), made three-pointers (4), made free throws (3), rebounds (4), assists (2) and steals (1) over the two non-conference victories.
Sumler is the first Norse to claim Horizon League Freshman of the Week since
Sam Vinson won the award seven times during the 2021-22 campaign, with the last honor coming on Feb. 14, 2022.
The Norse hit the road for a pre-holiday showdown at Florida Atlantic, set for Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 7 PM ET inside the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. The Owls will enter the non-conference clash 10-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 at home. Fans are able to
