CHICAGO – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team bounced right back Tuesday afternoon with a road win over UIC, 71-41. The Norse now improve to 15-4 overall this season, and 9-3 in Horizon League play. The Flames drop to 2-16 on the year and 1-12 in conference.
STATS LEADERS
- Khamari Mitchell-Steen continued her impressive play today, leading the Norse in total points with 14 overall. She also led NKU in assists with five and added two steals to her stat line.
- Carissa Garcia tallied 11 points in the matchup, shooting 3-for-5 beyond the arc. This was Garcia's eighth double-digit scoring game of the season as well.
- Trinity Thompson helped anchor NKU down low as the freshman grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in this conference win.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- The Norse began this conference game on a 12-4 scoring run through the opening five minutes of action. Four different Norse players scored during this run as well.
- Mitchell-Steen lead all scorers through the opening quarter with seven points. NKU held a 16-6 lead after one period over the Flames.
- NKU kept up its' Intense defensive play into the second quarter, holding UIC to just 1-for-9 shooting and going scoreless over seven minutes.
- Northern Kentucky saw its largest lead of the half at 1:42 in the second quarter, leading the Flames 32-16.
- Garcia hit back-to-back three pointers to close out the half to extend the Norse lead out to 34-18.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- NKU kept their foot on the gas pedal to begin the third quarter, shooting 4-for-5 in the opening four minutes to lead 41-22.
- The Norse built a 10-2 run midway through the third period to force an UIC timeout with the lead out to 49-24.
- Northern Kentucky continued their hot shooting throughout the third quarter, going 9-for-15 (60 percent) from the field.
- Defense played a huge role in the final quarter for NKU, holding UIC to just 2-for-9 from the floor and five total points.
- The Norse finished the game with a total of 18 offensive rebounds compared to that of UIC totaling just five.
GAME NOTES
- Thompson posted a career-high in both points and rebounds today, with 10 boards and nine total points.
- Tayah Irvin posted solid minutes for NKU today, finishing with four rebounds and a career-high four assists.
- NKU totaled 19 assists in this game today, tying a season-high they recorded against Wofford earlier in the year.
- This was the fifth straight win over UIC for Northern Kentucky and the Norse now hold a 10-2 all-time record over the Flames.
- A total of 13 players saw action in today's game for NKU, eight of which recorded points as well.
- Northern Kentucky currently sits at 15-4 overall, the best start the Norse have seen since becoming a NCAA Division I member school. The 9-3 record in Horizon League action so far is also a program best for NKU.
