HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team took down the Flames of UIC in a Horizon League matchup Thursday evening inside BB&T Arena by a final score of 67-57. The Norse improve to 17-5 overall this season, and 11-4 in conference play. The Flames drop to 2-18 this year and 1-14 in the Horizon League.
STATS LEADERS
- Lindsey Duvall finished the night with 28 total points to lead NKU, shooting 9-for-16 from the floor. Duvall also added nine rebounds and three assists to her stat sheet.
- Emmy Souder posted her second consecutive game finishing in double-figure scoring with 12 points tonight, shooting 5-of-9 overall. Souder. joined Duvall in bringing down nine total boards and she recorded two steals as well.
- Grayson Rose led the Norse in rebounding in this conference matchup, totaling 11 boards and she added eight points as well.
- Khamari Mitchell-Steen total a game-high five steals in this Norse victory, a new career-high for the freshman guard.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
- This conference battle began with each team trading baskets, as the Norse and the Flames each knocked down over 60 percent of shots midway through the opening quarter.
- UIC posted a 6-0 scoring run through the end of the first quarter and to begin the second, building a 19-15 lead over NKU.
- Duvall ended the scoreless run for Northern Kentucky with an offensive board put back to put the Flames lead to just 19-17 with under eight minutes remaining.
- NKU hit their first three-pointer of the game at 3:24 in the second quarter as Duvall began to heat up and NKU led 28-25.
- The Norse defense stepped up in a big way late in the second period, holding UIC to just 1-for-8 shooting from the floor to take a 33-27 lead into the half.
- Duvall continued to stay hot through the opening half, totaling 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and was able to grab three rebounds as well.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
- Northern Kentucky began finding rhythm beyond the arc as threes from Rose and Duvall force a Flames timeout with the Norse up 39-27.
- NKU continued an 18-4 run over 8:24 minutes carried over from the second quarter as the Norse generated a hot start to the third period.
- The intense defense of the Norse continued into the third quarter, holding UIC to just 1-of-14 shooting over four minutes.
- UIC fought right back against NKU, posting an 10-2 scoring run which led into the fourth quarter to cut the score to just 50-45.
- The Flames hit a scoreless streak of just over two minutes as the Norse began increasing their lead piece-by-piece at 53-45.
- Duvall hit a huge three-pointer coming out of a timeout with just 3:40 left in the game to extend the Norse lead out to 56-48. That then fueled a defensive stop by Ivy Turner who found Mitchell-Steen for the fast break layup.
- The Norse finished off the Flames with made free throws from Turner to defeat UIC 67-57.
GAME NOTES
- Duvall has now scored in double-digits in 21-of-22 games this season with her 28 points tonight. It is the eighth game she has scored 20 or more.
- Mitchell Steen continued to show off her impressive defense totaling a career-high five steals on the night.
- NKU completed the season-sweep against UIC, and this was the sixth straight win over UIC for Northern Kentucky. The Norse now hold a 11-2 all-time record over the Flames.
- Northern Kentucky currently sits at 17-5 overall, the best start the Norse have seen since becoming a NCAA Division I member school. The 11-4 record in Horizon League action so far is also a program best for NKU.
