HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky's Sam Vinson has been named the Nike® Horizon League Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the seventh time this season.
The guard from Fort Thomas, Ky. has tied four former freshmen for No. 3 all-time in Horizon League weekly awards history. His fellow seven-time winners are current Norse teammate Marques Warrick (2020-21), Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis (2018-19), Wright State's Loudon Love (2017-18) and Oakland's Kay Fielder (2013-14).
Former Green Bay guard Amari Davis holds the Horizon League Freshman of the Week record with 10 awards in 2019-20, while Dikembe Dixson (UIC) ranks second with eight in 2015-16.
Vinson earned the latest honor after averaging 15.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals in NKU's 3-0 week on the road.
He scored 13 points and tied a career high with eight rebounds in the Norse's 75-39 victory at Milwaukee Feb. 9. He added two assists and two steals. Vinson scored 14 points with five rebounds and two assists in the Norse's 71-62 triumph at Green Bay Feb. 11.
Then, in a 75-71 defeat of Wright State at the Nutter Center, Vinson contributed a team-high 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting and tied Adrian Nelson for the rebounding lead with six boards. Vinson chipped in an assist and a steal in the Feb. 13 victory.
Vinson shot 48.4% for the week as NKU improved to 15-10 (11-5 Horizon League).
Through NKU's 25 games, all of which he has started, Vinson has averaged 12.3 points with 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals. He ranks 21st nationally and second in the Horizon League in total steals (52). He's 33rd nationally and second in the conference in steals per game (2.1).
Vinson previously was named Nike® Horizon League Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week Nov. 22, Nov. 29, Dec. 13, Jan. 3, Jan. 24 and Jan. 30.
