CLEVELAND – The Northern Kentucky women's basketball team fell to the Vikings of Cleveland State in a nail-bitter of a game on the road, 59-56. The Norse currently stand at 16-5 overall and are 10-5 in the Horizon League. CSU improves to 14-4 overall and 9-3 within the conference. 
 

STATS LEADERS

  • Emmy Souder led all scorers in today's game with a career-high 22 points, shooting 10-17 overall (58.8 percent). Souder also led NKU in rebounds, pulling down eight total. 
  • Lindsey Duvall found herself in double-figure scoring as well with 14 points on the day. Duvall went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and grabbed seven total rebounds. 
  • Ivy Turner dished out a game-high seven assists against CSU along with totaling seven points and five rebounds. 
     

FIRST HALF SUMMARY

  • These two squads began the game trading buckets, which NKU held a 9-8 lead after a Mitchell-Steen three-pointer at 5:39 in the first period. 
  • Cleveland State closed the opening quarter on a 6-3 scoring run to hold a 16-12 advantage over the Norse. 
  • Northern Kentucky shot out of the gate in the second period with a 14-6 run fueled by the outside shooting of Duvall and Turner. 
  • CSU took a 33-32 lead into the half, after a made three-pointer from Barbara Zieniewska to put the Vikings up one. 
  • Souder continued to be dealt the ball down low in this opening half, totaling 12 points against the Vikings to begin the game. 
  • Both programs heavily favored getting the ball into the paint as the Norse totaled 20 first half points in the paint, compared to Cleveland State posting 26 overall. 
     

SECOND HALF SUMMARY

  • Duvall posted a 5-0 scoring run herself to open the second half of play, giving the Norse a 37-33 lead. 
  • Souder helped add to that opening quarter run with a layup and free throw to push the NKU lead out to 40-33. 
  • NKU and CSU each struggled shooting from the floor throughout the third period, as the Vikings posting a 6-2 run to cut the lead to just 44-42 with under a minute remaining. 
  • The high level of defensive play from each squad continued into the fourth quarter as both the Norse and Vikings were held scoreless through the opening 2:30 minutes of action. 
  • Cleveland State broke the scoreless streak in the final period with a 4-0 scoring run with just over six minutes left in the game. 
  • Northern Kentucky struggled shooting down the stretch of this fourth quarter, only posting 10 points overall. 
     

GAME NOTES

  • Souder's 22 points today was new career-high for the senior, as she finished the day shooting 10-17. Emmy's previous career-high was 19 points, which she posted on Jan. 2, 2020, against Youngstown State. 
  • Souder also posted career-highs in field goals made with 10 and field goals attempted with 17 as well. 
  • The Norse defense continued to create problems for opponents as NKU held Horizon League leading scorer Destiny Leo to just two points today. Leo struggled shooting 0-for-13 from the floor in 37 minutes of action. 
  • Cleveland State's bench played a huge role in today's game, as the Vikings totaled 29 bench points, compared to NKU's four. 

UP NEXT
Northern Kentucky returns to action next on Thursday, Feb. 10 as the Norse will host Horizon League opponent UIC inside BB&T Arena at 7 p.m.
