@NKUNorseBSB blasts Xavier at home, 16-6

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky Baseball team (3-5, 0-0 Horizon League) picked up the midweek nonconference win over Xavier (0-8, 0-0 Big East) Tuesday afternoon from Bill Aker Baseball Complex. 
 
AT THE PLATE

ON THE MOUND 
  • Ben Gerl (W, 1-2) picked up his first win of the season, starting on the hill for NKU. Gerl threw 2.0 innings allowing just two hits and one run.
  • TJ Graves relieved Gerl for an inning of work. Graves posted one strikeout and faced four batters during this scoreless outing. 
  • Kaden Echeman tossed 2.0 innings for NKU as well, striking out one but would allow three runs on three hits. 
  • Tyler Ollier was next up for the Norse, throwing 2.0 scoreless innings against XU, striking out one. 
  • Noah Richardson provided an inning of work where he struck out two after facing four total batters.
  • Finally, Drew Switzer got the call to throw the final inning against Xavier, striking out two, but allowing two runs also. 
 
AROUND THE HORN
  • The Musketeers jumped on the board first with an RBI single to center to start off the game at 1-0.
  • The Norse immediately retaliated with a six-run bottom of the first to claim a lead and never let up. 
  • NKU saw a total of three home runs in the first inning of action, as Glass, Odom and Gick all ignited the Norse offense. 
  • The slugfest continued into the second inning as Fisher joined in with a two-run shot to left.
  • Gick was not done showing off his power against XU, crushing his second homer of the day to left field to put the Norse up 9-1.
  • The final home run from NKU was from Vorhees in the fourth with a solo shot to left field.
  • Xavier managed to tack on three runs during the fifth and six innings, which included their first homer of the day as well. 
  • Northern Kentucky took XU's scoring personally as the Norse posted another six-spot on the Musketeers in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead out to 16-4.
  • NKU saw runs driven in during the seventh inning from McFadden-Ackman, Tucker, Moss and Vorhees.
  • XU went on to hit their second homer of the day in the top of the ninth, but NKU finished off the opposition's scoring after that to take the game 16-6. 
 
NORSE NOTES
  • Vorhees continued his hit streak out to eight total games to start the season for the Norse, and currently leads NKU hitting .419 overall. 
  • Northern Kentucky is currently on a two-game winning streak after defeating Butler on Tuesday this week. 
  • This was the second victory over a Big East program for the Norse this season as well. 
  • 23 total players saw action in this game for Xavier, including seven of which were pitchers. 
 
UP NEXT 
  • Northern Kentucky baseball looks to hit the road this weekend, traveling to Charleston, South Carolina for a three-game series against The Citadel. Game one is scheduled for Friday, March 4 with first pitch at 5 p.m. (ET).
