@NKUNorseBSB punches ticket to #HLBASE Tournament with win over Oakland

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky Baseball (18-33, 11-17 Horizon) punched their ticket to the 2022 Horizon League Championship with an 11-5 win over the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland (29-25, 18-11 Horizon) Saturday evening from the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
  • Oakland began game three on the scoreboard first once again in the opening inning with a pair of RBI singles gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
  • The Norse began the comeback in the bottom half of the inning with a solo blast over the left center field wall from Brennan Gick to put the score at 3-1.
  • NKU kept chipping away at the Golden Grizzlies lead in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a Zack Minton hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Manny Vorhees then continued doing what he's been doing all season, belting a grand slam homer over the center field wall to give NKU the 6-3 lead.
  • Noah Fisher tacked on another run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right field to see Treyvin Moss cross the plate, who had just stolen third base on the previous play.
  • Gick kept the offensive attack rolling with a double off the right field wall to knock in Ryan Glass from third base for the 8-3 lead.
  • The Golden Grizzlies added a run in the top of the fifth to cut the Norse lead to 8-4 overall.
  • Oakland and Northern Kentucky then endured a two-hour rain and lightning delay to shut down any momentum NKU had built.
  • The weather did not affect NKU however as the Norse busted the game open in the bottom of the sixth, beginning with a lead-off Glass triple to get the inning started. Gick then grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home Glass to extend the lead.
  • Liam McFadden-Ackman provided the second triple of the inning down the right field line to drive in a run, which was then followed up with a Michael Hall sacrifice fly.
  • Bryson Lonsbury went on to finish the game off and pick up the save to see NKU claim the 11-5 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Manny Vorhees changed the game with one swing of the bat today, as his grand slam saw the junior finish with four RBI, and one run scored.
  • Brennan Gick also had himself a day at the plate by going 2-for-4 with one homer, three RBI, one double and two runs scored.
  • Ben Gerl (W, 4-6) got the start on the hill today, throwing 5.0 total innings before heading into a weather delay. Gerl picked up his fourth win of the season after recording three strikeouts and allowing just three earned runs.
  • Bryson Lonsbury (S, 4) picked up where Gerl left off after the delay, throwing 4.0 total innings to earn himself the save. Lonsbury finished with giving up just three hits and one run while striking out two batters.
