This Week in Northern Kentucky Athletics: January 9 – January 15

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The start of the Spring semester signals the beginning of crossover season for Northern Kentucky Athletics, with a big week on the upcoming slate featuring multiple Norse programs.
 
This week features men's basketball battling for first place in the Horizon League, the return of NKU track & field, men's tennis season and home opener on Saturday, women's basketball with two road conference battles and another edition of the NKU Norse Nation Basketball Coaches Show on Tuesday.
 
 
TUESDAY NIGHT AT DEAD LOW BREWING FOR THE NKU NORSE NATION BASKETBALL COACHES SHOW

The Norse Nation Basketball Coaches show is back once again as NKU Athletics takes over Dead Low Brewing on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Join NKU basketball head coaches Darrin Horn and Camryn Whitaker every Tuesday from 6:00-7:00 PM ET for the next seven weeks at the closest brewery to the NKU campus. Jim Kelch and Rick Broering lead the broadcast, with this week's show being available nationwide on Fox Sports 1360.
 
Kids eat free every Tuesday at Dead Low and fans will also be able to take advantage of a $10 pretzels and pint deal. Norse Nation can also enjoy Dead Low's Norse Golden Ale, a delicious craft beer available exclusively at the brewery and all home NKU men's basketball games.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Norse fans are going to want to make sure they have Thursday circled on the calendar as Northern Kentucky and Milwaukee is set to clash for an early-season battle for first place in the Horizon League inside UMW Panther Arena on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 8 PM ET. NKU concludes the trip up North with a showdown at Green Bay on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 7 PM ET.
 
Both games this week are available to watch nationwide on ESPN+ and listen to anywhere in the country on ESPN 1530.
 
Fans will be tuning in to see if Marques Warrick can continue his climb up the NKU record book as he enters the week with 1,256 career points. He sits just 11 points back of Brian Lawhon (1,267 career points) for 19th all-time at NKU and 19 back of Dan Fleming (1,275) for 18th most in school history. On a national level this season, Warrick is currently ranked 17th in total points scored (326), 22nd in made field goals (117), and 34th in points per game (19.2).
 
Joining him on the national leader board is Sam Vinson (eighth in the nation in steals per game and 16th in steals overall) and Chris Brandon (22nd in rebounds and 40th in rebounds per contest).
 
As a team, NKU slots in at 22nd in the country in steals per game (9.4), 24th in turnover margin (4.0), 34th in turnovers forced per game (16.41) and 57th in scoring defense (64.2 points allowed per contest). All four marks lead the Horizon League.
 
Entering the week, Northern Kentucky is tied with Milwaukee for first in the Horizon League at 5-1 in conference play. Green Bay sits at 1-5 so far this season in the Horizon.
 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Friday vs. Oakland (7 PM ET) ): Watch | Live Stats Sunday at Detroit Mercy (1 PM ET): Watch | Live Stats   The Norse enter this week after posting a 1-1 record against Horizon League competition this past week, first defeating Milwaukee 66-60 in comeback fashion. NKU was then tripped up in their second contest against Green Bay.
Northern Kentucky's first game this week will see the Norse traveling to Rochester, Mich. to face the Golden Grizzlies to continue Horizon League play. NKU and Oakland will tip off inside the Athletics Center O'rena at 7 PM on Friday, January 13. The Norse hold a 11-9 series lead over the Golden Grizzlies as well.

The final matchup of the weekend for NKU will see the Norse traveling to Detroit to take on the Titans in another Horizon League showdown. Northern Kentucky and UDM will tip on Sunday, January 15 at 1 PM ET inside Calihan Hall. NKU has dominated the series against the Titans, leading 12-3 overall with a 4-2 record in Detroit.

 

MEN'S TENNIS Saturday vs. Bellarmine (4 PM ET) – Crestview Hills, KY Sunday @ #2 Ohio State (11 AM ET) – Columbus, OH

Northern Kentucky men's tennis is back for their championship Spring season beginning Saturday, Jan. 14 as the Norse host Bellarmine to begin the new year. NKU will welcome the Knights into the Five Seasons Sports Club in Crestview Hills, Ky. at 4 PM ET. Northern Kentucky and Bellarmine last met on January 29, 2021 where NKU got the best of the Knights, winning the match at 4-3 overall.
NKU will then wrap up the weekend on the road at Ohio State University on Sunday, Jan. 15. The Norse and the No. 2 nationally ranked Buckeyes will square off that morning beginning at 11 AM ET from Columbus, Ohio.
 
 
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

The Norse start the new semester off in a hurry with a trip down to Lexington for the University of Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial.
 
The two-date meet is set for Friday, Jan. 13 through Saturday, Jan. 14 at Nutter Field House. Friday's action gets underway with field events at 1:30 PM ET, followed by the track slate at 4:00 PM. On Saturday, field events get underway at 11:00 AM while track events will close out the day, starting at noon.

The Norse are coming off a season-opening Commonwealth College Opener in early December that saw NKU set four school records and 19 new personal bests.
