Volleyball picks up first win of season, tops ETSU Buccaneers

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's volleyball program secured their first win of the 2023 season after defeating a strong East Tennessee State University squad in four sets inside Regents Hall Saturday evening.

RECORDS: NKU: 1-1 (0-0-0 Horizon League), ETSU: 0-2 (0-0 SOCON)
 
MATCH NOTES
- Joy Banks continued to be a dominate force for the Norse to open the 2023 season as the junior posted 13 kills to lead overall in this match. Banks finished hitting .306 as well on 36 attempts while only committing two errors. She also notched her first double-double of the new year, totaling 16 digs to aid the NKU defensive effort. 
- Newcomer Ava Hoying made her presence known in this contest, as the freshman recorded a career-high 12 kills against the Bucs and when on to finish hitting .300 overall, another career-high. 
- Senior Skyy Smith was a wall at the net for Northern Kentucky tonight, as she tallied 8.0 total blocks to lead the Norse defensive front. Smith additionally chipped in eight kills while hitting an impressive .438 and added three service aces to her stat line. 
- The setting duo of Torie Houston and Katy Yopko combined for 47 assists as Yopko led with 25 on the night, compared to Houston's 22. Houston added two service aces in the match while Yopko provided six digs in the winning effort. 
- As a team, Northern Kentucky was impressive at the net, totaling 13.0 blocks overall compared to East Tennessee State's 9.0 in the match.

The Norse will conclude the 2023 Groen Family McDonald's NKU Invitational presented by Comfort Inn & Suites - Wilder tomorrow, Sunday, August 27. NKU will host Bowling Green State University inside Regents Hall in the final match of the tournament with a start time of 1 p.m. (ET) from Highland Heights.
