HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — With basketball season just under three weeks away, the Under Armour #HLMBB Preseason Poll Results were released by the league on Tuesday, with Northern Kentucky men's basketball picked to finish third by members of the media and communicators around the league.
In addition to the Preseason Poll, Preseason All-League teams were announced with NKU's Trey Robinson and Sam Vinson representing the Norse on the Preseason All-League First Team. It is the second straight season Vinson has been picked to a Preseason All-League team after being named to the Second Team ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.
Northern Kentucky has been picked to finish in the top-three of the preseason poll in eight consecutive years. The Norse were picked to finish first in each of the last two seasons.
Trey Robinson returns to the Norse for his final collegiate season in 2024-25 after a career year last season, in which he averaged 11.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.8 steals per contest. The graduate student from Hamilton, Ohio, was named the Horizon League's Defensive Player of the Year at the conclusion of the 2023-24 regular season, and was named to the All-Tournament Team following a career-best 33 point showing vs. Milwaukee in the Horizon League Tournament.
Coming into his final campaign, Robinson holds the opportunity to become just the 31st student-athlete in program history and eighth in the Division I era to score 1,000 points in an NKU uniform, needing 127 points to do so. He can also become just the eighth student-athlete in school history to notch 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds, needing just 89 boards to reach the 600 plateau.
Sam Vinson had his 2023-24 season cut short after just 13 games due to injury, but returns to the Norse this season as a senior leader who hopes to lead the Norse to a second Horizon League Championship and NCAA Tournament berth in three years. Prior to his season-ending injury, Vinson was averaging 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per night while adding nearly three steals per game on the defensive end.
Vinson has scored 908 career points in an NKU uniform, as both he and Robinson look to eclipse the 1,000 point mark this season. His 176 career steals rank seventh in program history. The Fort Thomas, Ky., native was named to the Horizon League's All-Defensive Team and All-League Third Team in his last full season (2022-23).
Northern Kentucky is set to open the year in style, with a pair of road trips to Florida State (Nov. 4) and Purdue (Nov. 8) before returning to Truist Arena for the home opener vs. Nicholls State (Nov. 14).
