Yordy nets a pair, Women's Soccer wins third straight in rout of Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. — Northern Kentucky women's soccer is getting hot at the right time, with the season winding down and the Horizon League Tournament coming soon. The Norse built off their momentum on Thursday night, as NKU routed Oakland 4-1. 

The win marked the third straight for the Norse and fifth in their last six matches. With the victory, NKU sits in a tie for second in the Horizon League, just one point shy of first place Detroit Mercy.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Lilly Yordy had quite the night for the Norse, capping off the second half offensive explosion with a pair of goals to put NKU up 4-0. Yordy now leads the Norse in both goals and assists with four of each. Emilie Doersching assisted Yordy's first, with Kylie Anderson assisting on her second. 
  • Erykah Cornett netted her second goal of the season to open the second half scoring. 
  • Natalie Newman put NKU on the board with a bottom corner goal in the first half. Greta Harmeyer was credited with the assist. 
  • Megan Gessner played the majority of the match in goal for NKU, and gave the Norse all the momentum after saving an Oakland penalty kick in the 56th minute. Overall, the junior made two saves in 72 minutes. 
  • NKU held a 21-11 advantage in shots, an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Natalie Newman put NKU on the board first in the 37th minute on an assist from Greta Harmeyer
  • Following Gessner's save of an Oakland PK, Erykah Cornett scored in the 58th minute to put NKU up 2-0. 
  • Lilly Yordy scored just 95 seconds later before scoring her second of the match in the 63rd minute.
  • Oakland netted a goal in the 77th minute, but it was too little, too late as NKU held on for the win.
