HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — One of the most skilled players in program history is staying in Highland Heights to mentor her former teammates, as Maddie Lacer has been hired as an assistant coach for the Northern Kentucky softball team.
"Maddie Lacer made a tremendous imprint on our program as a student-athlete," said head coach Morgan Gerak. "She set the standard for the way our players challenge themselves and compete. We are thrilled that she will continue to grow our program on the other side of the game. Her dedication to NKU and her understanding of our team culture will make an immediate impact to the NKU softball program. Maddie's knowledge not only of the catching position but also our hitting philosophy along with her relatability as a former student-athlete will serve our team in multitudes."
Lacer just wrapped up her stellar playing career this Spring after playing in 177 games with 174 starts for the Norse in her four seasons as a player.
"Coaching this team is a full-circle moment for me. Having spent four amazing years as a player, I'm honored to stay involved in a culture that emphasizes growth, teamwork, and passion," said Lacer. "It's so much fun to be back around the program, and I'm excited to guide these talented young athletes and continue to elevate our program!"
During her playing career, Lacer was named All-League First Team as a junior and All-League Second Team as a senior, winning Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year honors in both 2023 and 2024 thanks to her stellar work as a catcher.
She was a key part of the program's first ever Horizon League Championship and NCAA Regional appearance in 2023, reaching base in all five games at the Horizon League Tournament.
The Manteno, Illinois native posted a .990 career fielding percentage, committing just 11 errors in 999 chances as a Norse.
In addition to her fielding prowess, Lacer was a key bat for NKU, hitting .285 with nine doubles, a triple and 21 RBI during her senior season. In 2024, she posted twelve multi-hit games with four multi-RBI games as well.
