Volleyball shows fight but falls in five to Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. — After a three-set sweep in Friday night's matchup with Green Bay, the Norse looked to bounce back in a Saturday afternoon rematch. Northern Kentucky looked significantly stronger than in their prior match, as they were able to close out late and captured sets two and three. The Phoenix stormed back in the fourth and held on as they took home a five-set win over NKU.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • A trio of Norse players finished with double-digit kills, as Sydney Bray led the way with 15 while hitting .364 on the afternoon. Allison Risley and Joy Banks both recorded double-doubles, as Risley finished with 14 kills and 14 digs while Banks tallied 13 kills and 14 digs.
  • The setter duo of Lainey Green and Torie Houston put up 24 and 19 assists, respectively. 
  • Defensively, the Norse recorded 9 total blocks and 81 digs. Allie Siefke led the team in blocks, with five assists. Lucy Cluxton recorded 25 digs, a match-high. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Norse started strong in set one, jumping out to an 8-3 lead over the Phoenix. Green Bay quickly battled back with a 6-0 run. Both sides went back and forth until Northern Kentucky took a 19-16 lead. Green Bay then went on an 8-0 run, and took the set. 
  • The two sides traded runs in set two, going back and forth early. Late in the set, NKU stormed ahead off of a 19-19 tie, going on a 4-0 run. The Norse took the second and carried that momentum into the third, where the team hit .300 on their way to back-to-back set victories. In their two winning sets, Northern Kentucky hit 0.276 while hitting only .122 in their losing sets.
  • Green Bay jumped out to a huge lead in set four, going up 18-10, cruising their way to forcing set five. In the fifth, the Phoenix never trailed as they took home back-to-back victories.
