Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Overtime thriller sees women’s basketball fall just short against Oakland

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.  – Northern Kentucky University women's basketball restarted Horizon League play on Sunday afternoon after dropping their first two conference contests on the road at Cleveland State and at home against Youngstown State. Battling against the Golden Grizzlies of Oakland, the Norse looked to get a big win in conference play but fell heartbreakingly to Oakland in overtime.

THE FACTS
FINAL SCORE: Northern Kentucky – 85, Oakland – 86
LOCATION: Truist Arena - Highland Heights, Ky.
RECORDS: NKU: 3-11 (0-3 HL), OU: 5-7 (3-0 HL)

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN
- Macey Blevins, who had missed the previous five games due to injury, returned to action on Sunday and filled the stat sheet in 38 minutes, a team-high. Blevins totaled 20 points, eight assists, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, tying a career-high in assists and setting a new one outright in blocks.
- Kamora Morgan came off the bench for the Norse, but was second in minutes with 33, and she more than doubled Oakland's team bench points total, pouring in 23 on the afternoon. Morgan shot 5-8 on shots inside the arc, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists, and had a block and a steal.
- Halle Idowu went 5-8 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line, scoring 15 points. She added six rebounds, two assists, and a block.
- Mya Meredith fell a point and a rebound shy of her second double-double in three games, as she finished with nine and nine rebounds.
- Abby Wolterman went 4-6 from the field, scoring eight points, and grabbed six rebounds in 25 minutes, while registering a game-high +15 plus-minus.

NORSE NOTES
- NKU got off to a very hot start, as Macey Blevins scored eight of the Norse's first ten points. Near the end of the first, the NKU lead got up to 11, but that was their largest of the game. The Norse led by six in with three minutes to go in the second, but a nine-nothing run to end the quarter was enough for the Grizzlies to take their first lead of the game just before the half.
- A tight third quarter saw NKU and Oakland trade baskets, as it was a one-possession game for the entire duration of the period. NKU got nine shots at the charity stripe in the quarter but hit just five of them, and shot a poor 1-8 from deep. The Norse then flipped a switch on their three-point shooting in the fourth, making four of their first five attempts, as Blevins and Morgan each knocked down a pair. With just two and a half minutes to go, NKU led by five, but a pair of Golden Grizzly layups gave them the advantage. Halle Idowu was fouled with just nine seconds left and the Norse were down by one. She tied the game with a make on her first attempt but missed the second to give Oakland a chance to win it. An out-of-bounds call was reviewed with just under two seconds left, and it flipped in the Norse's favor, but a full-court heave from Morgan was off the mark as the two squads headed for bonus basketball.
- Oakland made a field goal on four of their first five possessions in overtime. After their fourth basket, they were sent to the line for 13 free throw attempts as the Norse attempted to claw their way back. Fortunately for NKU, Oakland shot just 6-13 from the stripe in the bonus period, giving NKU a shot to tie or win the game late. Down two with just four seconds on the clock, an errant pass by Morgan was picked off, and Oakland made two straight to steal the game and escape Highland Heights with a road victory.
