Women’s Soccer falls in Bluegrass Battle to EKU on Thursday night

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – In a match that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Northern Kentucky women's soccer program put together an absolute battle against in-state foe Eastern Kentucky, but the Norse ultimately found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-1 decision in a non-conference showdown inside the NKU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Lilly Yordy scored her first goal of the season and the second overall of her NKU career with a tally in the 53rd minute. - Lydia Self, Kylie Anderson, Kaya Vogt, Shay Shipley, Meghan Belrose and Yordy all sent a shot on target in the contest, respectively.
- Northern Kentucky outplayed Eastern Kentucky in the contest as the Norse recorded a strong edge in shots (14 to 7), corner kicks (5 to 1) and shots on target (6 to 4).  
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The match started with an even 45 minutes of play to lead to a 0-0 draw at the half. Northern Kentucky posted six shots in total while Eastern Kentucky was right behind with four attempts. The Norse also held a slight two to one lead in corners.
- It didn't take long for the deadlock to break as EKU got on the board just 21 seconds into the second half to take a 1-0 lead.
- It took just under seven minutes for NKU to tie things up as Lilly Yordy went on a run and finished it off with a perfect ball into the bottom corner of the net to make it a 1-1 contest. - Under two minutes later, the Colonels answered right back with another tally to retake the advantage at 2-1.
- Northern Kentucky turned up the pressure at the end, but Eastern Kentucky sealed the victory with another goal in the 89th minute to escape Highland Heights with the 3-1 win.
 
NEXT UP
The Norse hit the road for another bluegrass battle, this time at Morehead State, on Sunday, September 8. The non-conference clash will get underway at 1 PM ET inside Jayne Stadium. The match will be played in front of a national audience on ESPN+.
