Women’s Soccer blanks Morehead State in bluegrass battle

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer program won a bluegrass thriller as the Norse shut out Morehead State, 1-0, in a non-conference match between in-state foes at the MSU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.

It was one Norse fans will remember for a while as Kylie Anderson netted the game-winner with just under 10 minutes left in regulation to seal the NKU victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kylie Anderson picked a perfect time for her first goal of the season as the sophomore notched the game-winning goal in the 81st minute. It was already the fifth career goal of her NKU career.
- Lilly Yordy assisted on Anderson's game-winning tally as she stole the ball from Morehead State and sent it across to Anderson who knocked it home to give the Norse the win.
- The Northern Kentucky trio of Donna Bundy (30 minutes played), Tristen Cross (30 minutes) and Megan Gessner (30 minutes) split the game evenly between the pipes in the shutout victory. All three student-athletes recorded a save, respectively.
- The Norse win snapped a school-record, nine-game home unbeaten streak for Morehead State that dated back to August 17, 2023. The Eagles were 5-0-4 during the stretch.
- Northern Kentucky improved to 7-0-1 all-time against MSU in program history.
- The Norse have now picked up a victory in two of their last three matches played.
- The clean sheet was also the first for NKU so far on the young season.
- Northern Kentucky dominated the attack with a large edge in shots (14 to 5), shots on target (seven to three) and corners (six to one).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northern Kentucky and Morehead State took the first half to get a feel for one another. Although the Norse controlled the time of possession, the shot favored NKU by just a 4-1 margin after the opening 45 minutes of play.
- NKU sent five shots on goal in the second half, but it wasn't until the last one that gave them their lead. Yordy stole the ball deep in Eagles territory and sent a perfect cross to Anderson, who after one tap, took the ball out of the air and sent it to the back of the net for the 1-0 Northern Kentucky lead. - Bundy sealed the game and the NKU win with a huge save with just 2:20 left. The Norse return home for a Thursday night showdown under the lights against in-state foe Bellarmine on Thursday, September 12 at the NKU Soccer Stadium. 
 
The non-conference clash will get underway at 7 PM ET and will include a special NKU men's and women's basketball ticket raffle for all fans in attendance to go with a 70's at 7 celebration! As always, admission to the contest is free of charge.
