Baseball secures series sweep with offensive barrage on Sunday

OXFORD, Ala. — Northern Kentucky baseball secured a series sweep on Sunday, as the Norse downed Bellarmine for a third straight day in Alabama. 

NKU scored 17 runs on the day, including 11 across the final three home innings. 

On the weekend, the Norse scored 42 runs (14.0 per game).

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - PITCHING

  • Gerald Hanson got the start for the Norse, giving up four earned runs one five hits. He did notch two strikeouts. 
  • Logan Wilson then came in and pitched four innings, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out four batters. 
  • Jake Johnson got the win for the Norse. 
  • Aaron Cassie threw two innings of one run ball to lock down the save. 

BOX SCORE BREAKDOWN - BATTING

  • In the batter's box, Josh Williams led the Norse in RBI with six, finishing 1-4 with an RBI walk and a go-ahead grand slam. 
  • Logen Devenport returned to the lineup with a 2-4 day driving in three. 
  • Gabe Miranda drew three walks, finished 1-3 with 3 RBI, and score a run. Miranda drove in 11 runs on the weekend. 
  • Marcus Harrison finished 2-3 with a pair of runs scored. 
  • Tyler Shaneyfelt had another great day, finishing 2-3 with three walks drawn, an RBI, and five runs scored. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • NKU scored a run in the home first, as Tyler Shaneyfelt raced home after advancing to third on a flyout when the throw in missed the cutoff man. 
  • Bellarmine took a 4-1 lead, but the Norse responded with seven unanswered runs in the third fourth and fifth. Gabe Miranda gave the Norse the lead with a two-run single, and a Devenport double and Josh Williams sac fly pushed the lead to 8-4. 
  • A seven spot in the seventh gave Bellarmine the lead, but NKU countered with a six spot of its own, punctuated by Williams' go-ahead grand slam. 
  • Logen Devenport provided the final nail in the coffin with a two-run double. 

UP NEXT

  • NKU takes on Dayton in the official home opener on Tuesday.
