Norse Finish Second in Chaney-Denham-Landrum Shootout

FLORENCE, Ind. – Northern Kentucky University Norse men's golf opened the fall 2026 campaign on Monday, playing 36 holes at Belterra Golf Course in Florence, Indiana. The Norse competed in a tri-match against Bellarmine and Morehead State. NKU finished +7 overall, six strokes behind first-place Bellarmine, but one stroke ahead of the Eagles for a second-place finish. NKU started strong with a +1 team score over the first 18, but finished with a +6 in round two. 

Ben Carter and Michael Long were the individual standouts for the Norse on the day. Carter, a Kentucky Wesleyan transfer, impressed with an even-par over 36 in his first competition as a Norse, eagling on hole 18 in both rounds, the only eagles for the Norse on the day. Carter golfed a 73 on the 71-par course in the first round, birdieing twice with the one eagle and six bogeys. He finished strong in the second round, going over par on just two holes while recording three birdies. Long displayed consistency over the long day with five birdies and five bogeys overall. He opened the day with a 69 over the first 18, and finished with a 73 in round two. Both Carter and Long finished tied for sixth overall individually. 

Grant Broughton and Isaac Moody each finished tied for tenth at two-over, while competing as independents. Both had weaker starts (+5 for Broughton in round one, +3 for Moody in round one), but finished strong, as Carter went three-under in the second round while Moody went for 70. 

Freshman Paxton McKelvey finished 14th overall with a score of three-over par. He finished at even par in the first round, birdieing five times, but a double and triple bogey over his final 18 brought down his overall score. 

Micah Bertram (+6, 17th), Caleb Eaglin (+8, 23rd), and Brady Holmes (+10, 25th) rounded out the group of competitors for the Norse. 

Next up, NKU heads to Huntington, West Virginia for the Joe Feaganes Invitational hosted by Marshall.
