HOMEWOOD, Ill. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team opened its weekend of play in the Windy City with a 6-0 loss at the hands of Detroit Mercy on Friday evening.
The Norse had fight throughout the evening with
Hailey Shanahan dropping a 7-4 tiebreak in the second set in the top-flight match against Sasha Nionova. On the other side of the sheet,
Nicole Soutar took her first set against Nynke Ven Der Goot, 6-3, before falling in a tiebreaker, 7-4, in the second. With the team match decided, the two played a super tiebreaker for the third set with Van Der Goot edging the West Chester, Ohio, native, 11-9.
In consideration of NKU's early match tomorrow against Chicago State, the teams agreed to forego doubles play, leading to the 6-0 team score.
With the win, Detroit improved to 4-5 on the year, while NKU fell to 1-5.
Following NKU's morning matchup on Saturday against Chicago State, the Norse will conclude the weekend on Sunday against Northern Iowa.
