HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team showed fight, but fell short in a 5-0 loss to North Florida in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for the Norse.
North Florida (10-3, 2-0 A-Sun) opened the afternoon by taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Hailey Shanahan and
Danielle Donahue dropped an 8-1 pro set to Taylor Hollander and Esther Zuniga in the top flight, while
Nicole Soutar and
Sydney Power dropped an 8-2 match to Rebeca Pereira and Quetzali Vazquez at No. 2.
The Ospreys closed out the match with four singles victories. Zuniga defeated Shanahan in the top flight, 6-0, 6-1, while wins at the bottom three flights sealed the match.
Power showed fight in her singles match at No. 2 against Michelle Valdez, dropping a 6-4 opening set and trailing 4-1 before their match was abandoned with the team match won. Donahue dropped a 6-3 first set to Hollander as well, but did not get a chance to fight back.
The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for the Norse, who fell to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in A-Sun play.
The Norse will look to get back to their winning ways next week with a three-match swing in the Sunshine State. NKU travels to Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday before taking on A-Sun foes Stetson on Thursday and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.
