DELAND, Fla. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team battled the opposition and the elements in a 7-0 loss to Stetson in Atlantic Sun Conference play on Thursday.
Stetson (13-2, 3-0 A-Sun) opened the day by winning the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Arijana Korac and Maja Salibasic defeated
Sierra Nellessen and
Rheanna Morehart, 8-2, and Alizee Michaud and Ashley Dean defeated
Sydney Power and
Nicole Soutar, 8-2. As the rains came with the doubles point won, the top-flight match was abandoned and play resumed later with singles action.
Carolina Meregalli picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Soutar at No. 5 before another shower halted play once more. As play resumed,
Hailey Shanahan dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Michaud at No. 1 to make it a 3-0 lead, and Eveline Lepinay took a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6 to seal victory for the Hatters.
Danielle Donahue fought hard in a 7-5 Set 1 loss to Korac at No. 3 before a 6-1 Set 2 victory closed out the match. One break was again the difference for Morehart in Set 1 as she dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Dean at No. 4.
With the setback, NKU fell to 5-9 on the year and 0-2 in A-Sun play. The Norse will close out their weekend in the Sunshine State with a Saturday evening meeting at Florida Gulf Coast. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
