JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team saw its 2015 season come to an end on Friday with a 4-0 loss to Lipscomb in the opening round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, hosted at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"Our goal at the beginning of the year once we found out we had a chance, was to get here," said head coach
Brian Nester following the match. "It wasn't the only goal, but we accomplished that. In the future, our girls are going to look back and realize that they can compete at this level, and that we'll have to do a little bit more next year."
A pair of 8-2 wins decided doubles play in favor of Lipscomb, as Jenny Borck and Deahna Welcher defeated
Rheanna Morehart and
Nicole Soutar at No. 2 and Hannah Gamage and Danielle Kinnen bested
Sydney Power and
Yasmine Xantos at No. 3.
In singles action, Lipscomb quickly picked up a pair of points at No. 2 and No. 6, as
Sydney Power fell to Welcher, 6-1, 6-2, and Xantos dropped a 6-1, 6-1 result to Kinnen. The match went to the Lady Bisons when Morehart lost the No. 3 match to Laura Kent, 6-0, 6-1.
Hailey Shanahan took a 7-5 set win over Hannah Gamage in the top-flight match, but the match was abandoned with the team result in hand.
With the win, Lipscomb advances to the A-Sun Championship semifinals to take on the top-seed and host North Florida. NKU's season ends with a record of 6-16.
