CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – The Northern Kentucky University women's tennis team picked up a landmark win on Thursday afternoon, defeating Kennesaw State in Atlantic Sun Conference action by a 4-2 score at Five Seasons Sports Club.
The win was NKU's first ever against an A-Sun opponent, snapping a four-match losing streak to improve to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in A-Sun play. Kennesaw State fell to 1-12 overall and 0-4 in A-Sun action.
The Norse opened the afternoon by sweeping doubles play.
Nicole Soutar and
Rheanna Morehart got NKU's first win, taking an 8-1 decision against Isabela Castro and Gabriela Bueno at No. 2, and
Sydney Power and
Yasmine Xantos secured the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Alexandra Mercado and Cristina Martin at No. 3.
Hailey Shanahan and
Danielle Donahue completed the sweep at No. 1 with an 8-5 victory over Virginie Stein and Jana Hueckinghaus, 8-5.
Kennesaw State secured singles victories at No. 1 and No. 5 as Stein topped Shanahan, 6-1, 6-0, and Martin defeated Soutar, 6-1, 6-1. NKU rebounded, however, with three singles wins. Donahue defeated Castro, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4, and Morehart claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Mercado at the No. 3 match. NKU clenched victory in the No. 2 match after a 7-6, 6-0 win over Hueckinghaus.
NKU now looks to close out the weekend with a win at home, hosting USC Upstate on Saturday. First serve from the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex is scheduled for 10 a.m.
