Campbell takes finale over @NKUNorseBSB, 8-5

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team put together a three-run fifth to extend its lead on Sunday at Jim Perry Stadium, but it would not be enough as the Camels scored seven runs across the fifth and sixth to defeat the Norse, 8-5.

With the loss, NKU falls to 1-2 on the season while Campbell takes the series and improves to 2-1.

At the Plate

  • Shortstop Jake Richmond and second baseman Kyle Colletta posted multi-hit games with two hits apiece. Each had a run scored while Colletta added an RBI.
  • Rightfielder TJ Alas continued his strong weekend with a 1-for-3 showing that included a solo home run. Alas crossed the plate twice for NKU.
  • Third baseman Brad Bohlen and centerfielder Mike Moffatt added hits for the Norse. Trey Ganns and Will Haueter drove in one run apiece.
  • NKU posted seven total hits.
On the Mound
  • Sophomore Jordan Menfee started on the mound for NKU and held Campbell to one run and struck out four across his first four innings of work.
  • Menfee pitched into the fifth when the Camels broke through and totaled eight hits and five runs against the right-hander who was relieved by Charlie Jerger.
  • Jerger (0-1) absorbed the loss after tossing 2.2 frames with three hits and three runs, two earned. The senior lefty fanned two and walked one.
  • Kyle Arganbright and Joe Martin split the final inning of work and held the Camels hitless.
Key Moments
  • One run was scored across the first three innings on Sunday when the Camels plated a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 edge.
  • NKU scored all five of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
  • Alas led off the fourth with his solo homerun to put the Norse on the board. Richmond doubled down the leftfield line in the next at-bat. The shortstop stole third and came around to score on a Haueter groundout to put NKU ahead, 2-1.
  • The Norse scored three runs off two hits to extend their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth.
  • Colletta slapped an RBI double to plate Moffatt. Ganns followed with a bases-loaded walk and Alas capped off the inning with a run scored on a wild pitch.
  • Campbell tied it back up, 5-5, in its half of the inning with the help of a three-run homer off the bat of Cole Hallum.
  • A three-run double for the Camels in the sixth put the game out of reach of the Norse.
Norse Notes
  • Norse pitchers held the Camels to one run across seven-straight innings spanning from the seventh frame of Saturday's game through the fourth inning on Sunday.
  • Three Norse batted over .300 on the weekend. Colletta went 3-for-6 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Haueter batted. 308 on 4-for-13 hitting with a team-high three RBI. Meanwhile, Richmond batted an even .300 with three hits, two doubles and two runs scored.
  • Kyle Arganbright, who made his debut as a Norse on Friday, has tossed 2.2 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts in his two appearances.
  • NKU batted .412 (7-for-17) with runners on base on Sunday.
  • The Norse have turned seven double plays across the first three games while opponents have managed two.
