Sacramento State blanks @NKUNorseBSB on Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team fell to Sacramento State by a score of 10-0 on Saturday in game three of a four-game series at John Smith Field.

With the result, NKU dips to 1-5 while Sacramento State improves to 5-1.

At the Plate On the Mound
  • Senior reliever Charlie Jerger took over for starter Jordan Menfee in the third and held Sacramento State to two hits and one run over 3.0 innings pitched.
  • Brody Basilone tossed a scoreless and hitless seventh and eighth. He made just his second appearance out of the bullpen for NKU and retired six of his eight batters faced.
  • The loss was pinned on Menfee after the sophomore hurled 2.0 innings. Sacramento State starter Parker Brahms tossed 7.0 innings and picked up the win.
Key Moments
  • Sacramento State claimed a 3-0 lead through three innings after clubbing a two-run homer in the second and an RBI single in the third.
  • The Hornets added another run in the fifth before they scored six runs on five hits in the sixth inning, which included a grand slam from James Outman. They led 10-0 through six frames.
  • Basilone came out of the bullpen and held the Hornets hitless throughout the remainder of the game to avoid further damage.
  • NKU's best scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning when Haueter led off with a single up the middle. Richmond came through with a two-out single to centerfield and Kyle Colletta drew a walk to load the bases, but the trio was stranded on base to end the inning.
Norse Notes
  • TJ Alas has now recorded a hit in five of NKU's six games. He is 8-for-26 (.308) this season, behind Haueter who also has eight hits and a .320 batting average. The duo, along with Dominic Mercurio, is batting .333 against the Hornets.
  • A trio of true freshman made their first collegiate appearance on Saturday. Griffin Green subbed in at catcher while Brendan Alas played third base and Shane Paradis took over at shortstop.
  • Jerger now leads the bullpen with 7.1 innings pitched across three appearances. He owns a 3.68 ERA.
