@NKUNorseBSB drops hit parade at Sacramento State, 12-11

SACRAMENTO, Calif.  – The Northern Kentucky University baseball team had a pair of big innings highlighted by a seven-run sixth, but Sacramento State scored five runs across the final three innings to defeat the Norse, 12-11, in the series finale on Sunday at John Smith Field.

NKU dips to 1-6 overall while the Hornets improve to 6-1 with the series sweep.

At the Plate
  • Nine Norse posted at least one hit as the Hornets narrowly out-hit NKU, 16-15.
  • Five NKU players had a multi-hit game led by TJ Alas who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of runs scored.
  • Will Haueter (2-for-5), Trey Ganns (2-for-4), Dominic Mercurio (2-for-5) and Ty Amann (2-for-3) each posted two hits apiece.
  • A three-run homerun gave Chad Roberts a team-high three RBI while Ganns drove in a pair of runs.
  • Six other Norse had one RBI including freshmen Griffin Green and Preston Pilat.
On the Mound
  • Kyle Arganbright started on the mound for NKU and struck out six in 3.0 innings. The sophomore allowed three hits and one run while walking three.
  • Four Norse relievers saw action out of the bullpen.
  • The loss was pinned on Travis Rowland who tossed the eighth inning and allowed one hit and one run while striking out two. Sacramento State closer Alex Dentoni got the win after holding NKU scoreless for the final 2.0 innings.
Key Moments
  • The Norse scored four runs on five hits and an error in the top of the second for an early 4-0 lead.
  • Mike Moffatt and Amann led off the frame with a pair of singles. The duo scored on an RBI single from Green and a sacrifice fly from Pilat. Ganns capped off the inning with a two-run single up the middle.
  • Sacramento State spotted one run in the third then jumped ahead with a six-run fourth inning. A two-run homer from Kyle Reynolds helped put the Hornets ahead, 7-4, through four.
  • NKU then unleashed an offensive barrage in the sixth that was highlighted by a two-out, three-run homerun from Roberts. The inning also featured a trio of RBI doubles from Jake Richmond, Haueter and Mercurio and an RBI single from Amann as the Norse led, 10-7.
  • The Hornets made it a one-run game at 11-10 with three runs scored in their half of the sixth. They then launched a sacrifice fly to tie it up in the seventh, and took the lead for good on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
Norse Notes
  • NKU batted .500 (11-for-22) with runners on base on Sunday and .412 (7-for-17) with runners in scoring position. They converted on 2-of-3 opportunities with runners on third and less than two outs.
  • Northern Kentucky's 11 runs, 15 hits and five doubles are all season-highs.
  • Alas led three players who batted over .300 in the four-game series. Alas batted .389 with seven hits, four runs scored and two RBI. Four of his seven hits were for extra bases as the senior has a team-high .344 season average. Mercurio went 4-for-11 for a .364 average on the weekend while Haueter batted .353 on 6-for-17 hitting with three RBI.
  • Haueter registered his team-best fourth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Roberts' two-run homer was the third homerun laced by a Norse this season. Alas has hit the other two.
